"Buongiorno Italiano".
(Regional accents, on adverts or not, don't annoy me.)

DIBLOWMADIG EEMYOONIDY!

every accent is a regional accent and everybody who can speak has one

Pretty much what my hatred is yes

I just speak normally - when I speak, in my head it just sounds normal and not at all what it sounds like when, for instance, someone from Wales speaks.

They think we sound like English pricks.

• #13358
guys imagine the existential horror of being from a region
-
• #13359
Or worse than that: daring to not modify your accent.

I live in a region: Daily life is a confusing cacophony of slurring and twanging. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be to talk that way as well as having to hear it all the time.
-
• #13361
They don't have to hear it all the time, just you sounding like a faacking caaant when you're about.
-
• #13362
Or possibly like a jolly silly nincompoop.

Flippancy aside, what’s the root of the tendency for people with RP accents to believe they don’t have an accent? The BBC?
With me it’s just my solipsistic only-child syndrome, but there must be other reasons.

Privilege.

Or just a complete lack of reflection on the topic. I recently saw some American on reddit ask why the English have such an accent when he himself just speaks normally... yeah, he wasn't joking.

• #13371
That’s really common
Essentially Americans shriek through their noses. Its not necessarily a bad thing, some are quite good at it. -

I think the media in general. BBC Breakfast, Sport and 5 Live now based in Salford but rarely does a proper Ordsall scally get any airtime.

I'm not particularly "sensitive" to accents. I usually barely notice them but this lady's voice really puts me on edge.
Given that she has a voiceover job, I think the problem probably sits with me rather than her.

Any episode of How It's Made that isn't presented by Hollyoaks' and Coronation Street's Tony Hirst just doesn't sound right to me
