as someone who can skid comfortably i still felt uncomfortable last week when my front brake cable snapped
the prospect of riding without any form of actual brake (ie method to rapidly deccelarate) just sounds stupid
am assuming the OP is slightly young and reckless - i do remember drunkenly using mopeds when 19 on the greek islands, with hindsight possibly one of the most fucking stupid things I have done (others here can probably point out a whole load of moronic shit i have done as well)
so yep, we all do stupid shit, but learning from it is the most important thing
when i first saw this thread pop up I was worried that the OP had learnt the lesson the hard way and so was actually relieved that common sense had prevailed, rather than becoming intimately acquainted with a car/lorry/wall/pedestrian

Or it's like writing a really dumb post on these forums, thinking twice about hitting the submit button, then hitting it anyway, then very quickly, becoming painfully aware, that you're nothing more than a very small, and insignificant turd. In fact it's exactly like that.
Repped for taking it like a
midgetman. -

Not as young as you might think, but reckless, yes. But I have learnt from it, and fortunately, not the hard way.
I liked your cycle training post. I'm going to check out what there is in my area. I've been riding bikes since I was a kid, but could definitely benefit from this, thanks for posting it.
And thanks for not calling me an illiterate fuckwit ;)

contact CTUK or wiganwill
they can help you find funding - a lot of us have two potential sources of funding - the borough we live in and the borough we work in...

1 - So, I've been riding brakeless for the past few months,...
2 - but I just can't get to grips with skidding on the roads.
3 - Don't know why, but my technique just isn't working on the tarmac...
4 - It's not been a major issue on my commute, apart from a couple of near misses.
5 - But I think the longer I go on, the more I'm dicing with death....
6 - Anyone got any advice on making it work1st off, you're an idiot, but seriously, you are.
1 - Idiotic/mental
2 - is that a sport? Unless you're rich, or stupid, (or both),why would you choose to rely only on a braking mechanism you admittedly don't master?
3 - dude, technique? it's called HTFU
4 - you're a commuter endangering other commuters. Sometimes i wish fixed gear bikes would become illegal, like that!... so that noobs like you would lose the interest. It's fucking painful, really, to read threads like this.
5 - struth
6 - get an oyster -

I noticed that someone had removed the rear brake from their ladies town bike which had typical steel rims. They claimed they had made it fixed to be lighter, but It struck me as odd that they still had normal flat pedals and only one brake on a steel rimmed bike on a wet day.
So I butted into their conversation with someone else, quite abruptly asking "can you stop alright on that" to which the reply was "of course I can, I wouldnt be riding it otherwise" In an offended kinf of way. I think my helpful concern came across all wrong and I just sounded like a snobbish smarmy prick. They actualy question/concern about flat pedals went right over their head, so I shut up and left it.
I was just wondering if anyone else finds it challenging to explain to friend-of-friend types about inadequate braking on their bikes? Especially girls, I just come off as some self-important sexist fixie snob.

the latest fashion I have seen around is the "Instant faux fixie" which is an old geared bike with downtube shifters. Everything is stock until you see the bars which are cut down flat/risers with a single front brake.

I saw an "Instant faux fixie" today. It was a Mercian road bike probably 70's, with narrow flat bars and only a front brake.
Oh and the guy was riding on flat pedals with his heels doing the pedalling, feet akimbo.
I shed a tear but I didn't mind because it was raining.

Already got one of those in the works.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you ride with a freewheel and no back brake you're either a poser or a moron. At least the moron has an excuse.

think it comes down to whether you want to use your bike for commutes etc on busy roads, or just faff about on it and ride on the pavement waves fist
I commute and generally ride fixed, but i've got two ultegra brakes, since it strikes me as just plain dangerous to sacrifice your ability to stop sharpish when some tw*t pulls out on you. Admittedly, the rear brake doesnt see much use, but it's just nice to know it's there. -

To be brutally honest I think strangers lecturing people unasked on any topic probably comes across as sanctimonious and arrogant because, well, it is a bit, isn't it?
I am not saying your concern for her safety isn't genuine, but you wouldn't go up to someone smoking a cigarette and start banging on about lung cancer. Well, some people would I suppose.

True story, I remember us having a conversation about this outside The Kings Arms months ago :)
