Here's what I moved. If you want to make a wiki page called fakenger, go ahead. But put in the right place.

A Fakenger is a copycat of a london bicycle messenger. They ride fixed wheels and dress in a hipster uniform. The uniform consists of rolled up jeans or tight jeans, a courier style bag and a cycling hat. You can spot the difference from a real courier by lack of radio, relative sobriety and clean fingernails. Oddly they all seem to be of slight build. They like to fashion themselves on a messenger. The word fakenger was created by Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill was a London bicycle messenger for years and is now a controller at a courier company. He created a blogg for london messengers called Movingtargetzine and it was here he started the term Fakenger. The term was first derogatory but is now accepted as a descriptive word in messenger circles. Fakengers sprung up at the same time that commuting in London became fashionable. They started to appear about 2 years ago and now there are many. There seems to be a lot of Fakengers living in Hackney. The fakengers have a forum called londonfixedgearandsinglespeed. They like to chat about repairing punctures and chain tension. They also like to take photos of their bikes and upload them onto the forum." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Buffalo Bill (talk • contribs) 17:09, 3 November 2007 (UTC

    haha the cheek!

    Bill didn't write that surely?

  • brilliant !

  • Derogatory connotations
Use of the word hipster in present day slang has developed distinct negative connotations, including: identifying that a person may be superficially following recently mass produced, homogeneous, urban fashion trends, overly concerned with their image and the contradictions of their identity, potentially anorexic, disingenuously appropriating a pseudo-artistic image or "a collage of other urban identies" from the past, or simply an elitist. Similar to other social groups, hipsters have been accused of exercising peer pressure to persuade other members of the group to adopt certain attitudes and ideas (e.g., that the music of Steely Dan lacks soul). Though many hipsters are seen to identify strongly with the perceived rarity and exoticness of their particular fashion and tastes, the phenomenon of moving into city centers and adopting "new" urban attitudes toward fashion, design, and culture is currently a major social trend and is the subject of numerous reality and home improvement television shows. Often in its negative connotation, 'hipsters' are considered apathetic, apolitical, and self-entitled by other, often marginalized sectors of society they live amongst, including previous generations of bohemian and/or "counter-culture" artists and thinkers.

    Doesn't that describe you perfectly?

  • do you have to be a courier to get into alley cat races (surely anyone could laminate a card and stick it in their back wheel)

  • No, but if you're not the curse of the fakenger will snap your frame mid-race..

  • i doubt that my bikes made of british steel and is completely unsnapperable

  • i hope..............

vintage, but mmm, that might mean i trying to make a statement about not buyig out to big companies, hence entrenching myself further as a hipster. quandry!!!

  • I don't need an ipod, there is always something interesting going on in my head to keep me entertained.

even though its a classic your still buying into big companies in fact i think at the tme they came out nokia were the biggest, more like your trying to denounce social trends and create your own style as an "individual"

you've been delving through my closet checking out my vast collection of vintage shirts scavenged from local oxfam shops!?! i'm individualistic ;)

  • problem with being an individual is your never one for long as soon as people start to see you being individual they will be like "i wanna be individual aswell" and then you become a trendsetter this is how human social trends evolve, also its well documented that fashion in particular is cyclic and what was fashionable way back when will usually come back into fashion again.

  • dogs is definitely an individual.

No one would want to be like him.

  • I am faker than all of you.

  • i got my girlfriend one of those creative Zens for xmas last year, of course I managed to get a pink and white one (unavailable in UK) flown in from the States, just for that extra bit of individuality....am I / she a hipster?

  • Winston, your so far from being a hipster you've gone full circle and become a trend setter.......it seems your plan has back fired!

  • you've seen me riding my apollo mountain bike then?...just wait and see....next big thing....in an ironic way mind you.

  • already got one....

  • BTW Aidan, did you know you will be working at the Roller Race? you will be paid one empanada and a can of stella and will occasionally be released from your duties to perform 30 second bursts of amazing skilll on the rig.....
