  • got stopped at notting hill carnival on monday by unmarked car after rolling through two or three lights he pulled me over and said he could confiscate my bike as i was partaking in anti social behaviour ?!?!?!? i was shocked but eventually he ended up asking me how much the bike was and where did i get my wheels !!! he seemed impressed i had cycled from stratford so much so he let me go SWEET

  • Object - cheers!

Yeah lpg - the solution is to find name and address which match and give those. But also not be carrying stuff like driving licence.

Also one to bare in mind - i know someone who once jumped 2 sets of lights in a row, cops followed through both lights and tried to fine her for both. Apparently they cant do that - they have to stop you after the first one and can only fine you for jumping one.

  • runcible rakan Object - cheers!

    You're welcome.

    thats good to know,
as far as fake id goes, just keep all your id and such in a secret pocket in your bag?
claim you dont carry a wallet

i went for years with out any sort of wallet, just stuffed some money in my pocket and left the house

  • if the can not asertain who you are they can take you down 'unt station.

I'd advise against this. As I said in a thread in which fare evading was being discussed, I know first hand that police officers will arrest you on the basis of vagrancy if you are unable to provide any documentation no matter how tenuous to show who you are.

It's a horrible loop-hole but one that they will use.

If you've earned the £30 fine I'd say you should be thankful you're getting off so lightly, nothing will go on record and you can ride away. So take it on the chin son and pay the fine.

  • Or, argue the point, get arrested, spend half your day in the lockup and then STILL have to pay the fine..

  • Googled the number object gave me and found you can pay online:
    https://secure.informcommunications.plc.uk/cao/

I love how the actual fine they give you has none of this information on it.

  • Yup, they want you to forget it so they can charge you more.

Do the crime, do the time.... or don't get caught ;)

  • Just paid a Fixed Penalty Notice using this link:

    https://caomain.latestinfo.co.uk/met/

The form asks for a fine code letter, which does not appear on the FPN. I googled this and found the following. "N" seems to cover it.

Weird that this method of payment is not printed on the fine.

It was for riding on the pavement if you are interested, I have a little duck through near St James's Park leading on to Birdcage Walk to avoid being crushed by black cabs ferrying politicians and civil servants to their burrows.

  • I've got to pay one and send in my licence to get points, but will be out of the country and need my licence in case the bike breaks down in the middle of nowhere and I need to hire a car. I get back on the day after I have to get my licence to them.

Does anyone know if they're likely to give any wiggle room on this, or where I could phone? The police don't have any phone numbers other than 999 - it's one of the ways they keep crime figures manageable, I suppose.

Why not pay it, but neglect to send in your licence and then claim you forgot that part? They'll then send you a letter asking for your licence as well, which you'll not receive until you get back. You then call them the day you're back and say 'OMG OHNOES I DIDN'T SEE THAT PART, SOOOO SORRY, I'VE BEEN ABROAD UNTIL TODAY SO I DIDN'T GET YOUR LETTER UNTIL NOW...', then send it off that day. They can't penalise you further for paying your fine on time ;). The paper trail can be your get-out clause 'obviously I wasn't trying to do anything untoward by missing the deadline - I paid the fine after all! etc etc.'...

Without meaning to be rude, why dont you just get your bike into working condition before you go an take decent amount of spare tools incase you break down.

I cant drive and I've never needed to because my bike broke down.

  • Yes, appreciate that, but it is South Africa, and I also want to be prepared in case the bike's stolen, run over or any other emergency. If I get robbed in the middle of the Drakensburg, for example, I want to have some options. Also, I'm doing a 3-day stage mountin trail race out there (running), and can't rule out injury. Belt and braces, innit?

  • Don't be daft, Dan.

That URL doesn't look anything like an official government site, and I get a security warning if I click on the icon in the corner.

    Why wouldn't it be a direct.gov.uk address?

  • Agree, that link looks well dodgy Jay. I'd think tiwce before putting in your card details

  • knightlancer, why do you have to send your driving license in when paying a fixed penalty for a cycling offence?

  • It's a real website for a real company... legit apparently.

The website is owned by Inform Communications Plc.

    Details can be seen here:
    http://www.duedil.com/company/02644647/inform-communications-plc

They provide out-sourcing of revenue collection services, such as parking fines, tickets, etc.

You're a "customer" of theirs, given to them by the police/local government.

Their marketing site is here: http://setyourcustomersfree.com/index.php

You should feel happy, you've just helped turn around the finances of a small company... they're actually profitable this year!

  • It's for speeding, not cycling, so slightly OT, but this seemed the most likely place to get some opinions/insight.

  • Pleased to hear it as I am worried about endorsements on driving licenses for cycling offences. I think it can happen but have never been asked for my driving license yet and usually don't carry it while cycling.

  • Urban Myth MrO.

Yes and yes. I noticed that after I had entered my details. Looks like their SSL certificate is a bit dodgy.

I wonder what commission they take. Surely can't be more expensive than employing somebody to manually process the cheque/money order and fine slip.

On the other hand, one less job...

  • @ RJBHurst fair point, I've never been to the Drakensburg on my bike!

Lesotho only has about 3 roads anyway you'd be better off taking your helicopter license :-)

Reminds me, this does piss me off.
A mate ended up with points (think it was 1 or 2?) on his commercial license for 'excessive speed on a cycle' I.E. he was hooning down a hill doing maybe 35mph on a push bike. I was also there and probably going faster, on a ropier bike, in a dodgier manor, but because I was 15 and didn't have a car license then they couldn't do jack.
Points on his license which could make it more expensive/less likely he can get jobs driving his HGV in a more professional manor?
