  • 52cm 531 track frame - ~1800g + 700g fork

  • My Scott nitrous 'super light' 22 weighs 38lbs I think :/ hahaha

The fixed gear Raleigh with 18-23 tubing weighs around 20/22 pounds

The gt series 2 weighs about 20lbs

Been a while since I weighed them but think there right :). Certainly the GT with water bottle lights etc weighs the same as the Raleigh with nothing on

  • I wanted to ask "bike gurus", how much weight of the bike matters?!
yes, you accelerate faster ,easier to take it upstairs ... that's about it ?!

Of course there are limits on "heavyness" of the bike.

I have a steel framed fixie, (roughly 12kg), and I like it. What are the benefits of having a light weight bike ?

  • it is more fun to ride

  • dolan seta, size 58, frame only: 1.14kg

  • ive never accuratly bothered weighing a bike till saw this thread. only ever comparef to "brickmans tried and tested pick it up and guess to nearest 5lb routine"

i.e i guessed my marin mtb was 30lb ish. ideal weighr for a 6" all mountain bike with dj proff wheels and cheap tyres. turns out it was 12.5kg whatwcer that is in english

commuter 90s road bike thats 2sizes too small for me. 10.0kg dead. still heavy compared to crabon fribre. but then its a commuter.

70s jackson road wuth touring wheels. 10.5kg. not bad for 40yr old with overly heavy wheels

the lightestest? a ss mtb made from scrap/ worn out stuff at 9.5kg

the most fun? the marin mtb. yeah could be lighter but i love it. road bikes make me clench through every pothole, cateye and cut in the road. on mtb can manual down the hill to work, pop over walls, session the cprners like im im on a dh course and arrive at work will biggest grin ever*

*but maybe a sweaty back lol

  • I have two bike, one that weight a little under 8kg, another that weight a little under 11kg.

The only difference I notice is the geometry, one is slacker, other is tighter, as well as the frame stiffness and how it handle road vibration.

Weight is something I only care about when carrying it up a flight of stair.

  • To really get a feel of what difference weight makes then ride two bikes at the extremes and you will find the answer. Comparing an 8kg bike to a 8.7kg bike is not going to do that.

Ride a 6.5kg bike and then a 16kg bike and see which feels nicer to ride, handle, accelerate, go up a hill etc,. (obviously there will be many other factors but the weight will be the main one)

  • I've got an Elswick Hopper Lincoln Imp that I've upgraded to mostly new parts and despite the fact its (straight gauge) 531, it still weighs a ton...

    I'd notice that.

I'm 85Kg too, so the difference in total weight is small. But step out of the saddle, and you feel it. I doubt it translates to a meaningful amount of time/watts saved per 10 - 35 kph acceleration though. Its just a nice feeling.

  • Wabi Lightning 55 cm with various weight weenie bits, novatec/kinlin wheels: 6.2 kg. That's with a front brake, and a bottle cage.

Do you like to 'take it upstairs'?

  • It's all a crock of shit. I have a 22 kilo Dutch bike that I can still go quite fast on. Fair enough speeding up, slowing down and going up hills are all a bit more difficult. But it's London, it's flat.

  • Just worked out that my new geared build should come in at approximately 7.1kg give or take.... for under a grand.

Dammit, am I doing it rite? ;)

  • Depends, how reliable is that estimate?

  • Partly from Ribble, partly from Weenies, and the rest from Parker International.

Don't think I've left anything out of my little spreadsheet, component-wise, and I've had to take a guess at the frame weight based on a 50 being 1.050 and mine being a 59...

May well come in a few hundred g more than I thought, but even at 7.5kg that's a good 1.5 lighter than my ruined Fuji was

  • my carbon bike was 7.5kg and your new one is pretty much the same.

  • DAMN! - I forgot to include the 44grams of bottle cages!

    /Thread implodes

Oh yeah, hadn't thought of that.... rs80's, same size(?) carbon ribble frame, carbon bitz etc.

    /coolstory

  • I'd trust the WW numbers, the others may or may not be accurate.

Sounds like it'll be decent anyway- be interesting to find out when it's all together.

At 7.1kg you probably qualify as "fairly light"

  • open mould carbon frame, just like the Ribble, RS80's, ritchey carbon stem, seatpost, ultremo tyres, sram rival which is pretty much the same weight as ultegra. They're pretty much the same.

  • Little update on the build...

    it's done!

Quite a bit off being around 7.1-7.5kg, maybe 7.8-8 but couldn't get an accurate reading in the scales . Not sure where the additional weight's come from (miss-represented part specs online? who knows) but I don't care anymore - first 5-6 miles riding home were utter bliss. Really couldn't be happier for the price

What was the overall cost? I am keen on similar setup but with a stealth frame ..

It sounds ridiculously heavy. Throw it away and start again. :)
