Bike & Frame Weight

  • It is not noticeable from an unsprung weight perspective as nothing is sprung so all weight is unsprung, unless you are talking full sus MTB?

However, light tyres/rims/spokes are definitely noticeable on a bike and probably make the most noticeable difference when saving any weight.
Put a set of Lightweights on a heavyish bike and the bike would feel noticeably quicker/better

  • ^ I'm calling bullshit on that 1930s bike. They must've measured a bike built at size 24cm or only counted the main triangle or something. The ALU saddle and post weighs half the entire STEEL frame? I don't think so.

I was thinking the same. Maybe scales were not as good in those days. They also suggest that road bikes were available that weighed around 12lbs.

  • What's light for a bike then?

I thought mine was pretty light, but today in our work's cycle parking there was the carbon fibre Giant (geared) with Dura-Ace bits on it and some Kysrium wheels which when lifted (as you do when no-one's about) appeared to weigh absolutely fuck all and put both of my bikes to shame.

    Suffering from bike envy.

  • My fixie wixie bedwetter weighs 6.5kg.
    Which is nice.

  • Fixed bike.
    Reynolds 531SL frame + forks
    1 x front Shimano brake
    1 x TT brake lever
    Shimano 600 crank
    Profile Desin T2+ aerobars
Mavic CXP33 rims + Goldtec hubs
Weighing in at 8.7kg, not too shabby for an early 80s steel frame I reckon.

    Scott CR1 Team - 52cm.
    Geared bike.
Frame + forks both carbon fibre
    105 STI + brakes + front derailleur
    Ultegra cranks + rear derailleur
    Profile Desin T2+ aerobars
    Mavic Aksium wheels
Weighing in at a rather disappointing 9.1kg. =(

  • Have you got your seatposts round the wrong way on purpose, like?

  • TT'ers and some Triathletes have some odd habits. I don't approve, personally, but it brings the body forward over the bottom bracket to allow for an aero position while driving heavily down on the pedals.
I'd also guess that Prime Heretic is a smaller individual with a small inside leg measurement.

  • I have incredibly short torso. ;_;

  • To put all this in perspective:

    • UCI rules state minimum mass 6.8kg or 14.99lbs.

    • My Fahg' lock weighs 1.9kg, and my Abus cable lock about the same.....

So when locking my super-light weight ss, the locks are almost half the weight again of the bike....

    How the fuck??

    Post some stats/pics?

  • I have no idea how you've managed it, but your Scott weighs the same as my geared steel 80/90s Merckx (built up with modern low-end groupset and wheels)

  • Never mind that, the saddle on that Fangio has melted in the heat! Was hot today though.

No I don't understand it either, it makes no sense whatsoever.

  • ^Aksiums, aerobars, that saddle and seatpost.

  • ^Aksiums, aerobars, that saddle and seatpost.

    Well aerobars are 500g.

Just weighed the wheels, all in with tyres, innertube caps etc.. 1.66kg front, 1.72kg rear.

According to that weenie site Aksiums are 1916g together and a decent set of wheels would be ~1550-1600kg so ~300g saving.

I think I can see where this is going!

  • Woah - did you crash that Scott in the ugly forest?

  • Blimey! Did that Scott have a collision in the unsightly copse?

  • So....

    Abus 100cm cable lock = 1.87kg
    Fahg' U lock = 1.98kg
Total lock weight for leaving the bike anywhere I can't see it = 3.85kg

My Condor SS defo does not weigh more than my previous Madone 5.5 which weighed less than 8.5kg (17.2lbs in fact).. but let's just assume for simplicity the Condor weights 8.5, therefore 4.25 is half it's weight....therefore I stand by my post that the 'price' of security is almost half the weight of the bike again.

I have a very tedious obsesson about weight, and if I ever have the balls to ride fixed, you can rest assured the first thing that will be ditched will be the rear brakes etc. to save weight... I might leave the internal cable guides though to avoid a respray. I even have been known, chronicled elsewhere, to worry about bottle cage mountings.....

    I'm a bit sad really.......

Decent set of wheels including skewers would be 1550-1600g. So that's another ~150g for a low-end Mavic pair of rods.

  • Hmm thanks, well I have been thinking of upgrading.

My commute soon will be through the peaks so I was planning on switching the fixed to geared, using the Aksiums for commuting and upgrading the wheels on the Scott.

  • Woah - did you crash that Scott in the ugly forest?

Not only fat but ugly too? =(

  • My commute soon will be through the peaks.......

Do you mean Hampstead Heath? Not sure we really do 'peaks' int'town :-)
