I had one of those for the Bowlie funding thing. Pain in the arse it was... I had to update a local database every time a donation came in. It meant that it was nearly always slightly out of date, and that I was spending tons of time updating it.
The target was the CDN costs... £180-ish (or whatever that dollar amount I said earlier was). But any extra just goes into the paypal account and sits there covering server fees each month.
So there's no top to the fund raising thermometer, as any extras just support the usual costs. Today was about doing something to pay for this exceptional one-off cost, but if there is extra then it reduces pressure to panic about the reserves in the paypal and adsense revenues (which are still declining, have been since last September when the crunch happened).
v true, but a little extra in the LFGSS pot means you can start funding ventures like the T-shirts as you have some capital to lay out that is not your own.
As the great minds of ancient greece used to say "every little helps"

Thanks to all. I've now fully paid the CDN costs for the next 6 months (which includes that one-time cost for the storage).
The little extra there was funds about another 4 weeks of regular server costs, so that extends the amount of time we have there too.
When I do the monthly accounts at the end of this month I'll let you know how this translates into server time that we have funds for (i.e. how long we have until we're broke).

And I've just paid off the licensing costs of the software for another year. You can tell this is an anniversary month... I wonder when the SSL certificate needs paying for?
Just checked... 11th June. A few months then.

Something weird has happened this month.
Recently (last 5 months) the adverts have only been covering an ever reducing portion of the costs, in February that was as low as around 60% of the costs... which basically meant the forum spent the month in deficit (from advertising) and so I raided the forum coffers to cover the costs (not much gets donated usually so seeing more going out than on average comes in is hard).
But this month (March) the adverts have raised about 90% of the costs. That's a significant increase in advertising revenue... but I don't know why.
I'd like to think that having the CDN and removing javascript for guests has speeded things up so much that this is why people stayed around, clicked adverts, etc. But honestly... I've no idea.
Anyhow, just wanted to share the happy news that even though it might be an anomaly, the forum almost paid it's way this month, and with the donations for the CDN, this month actually produced an overall profit that can be put back into the coffers.
This is a damn good achievement, so I want to say thanks to all for the donations and support... and for those guests who will never read this, thanks for the advert clicks*.
Cheers
David
- Although, please do NOT take this as encouragement to click adverts... Google detect stuff like that and it risks us losing the account, which would be devastating to our very small revenue stream.

It will only get busier - there no other way to increase the amount you get from the adverts with it being so niche?
Also - There will be plenty of fund raising sessions through out the summer to build up the coffers. should see you through the seasonal lull without you having to sell your body again.
