Sorry to dig up but trying to stay relevant - but these look pretty handy for the purpose http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/reviews/2010/02/2-live-crew-with-kids-in-the-room-airdrive-heaphones-review.ars
Basically in ear headphones that are designed to also let sound in.... they'll probably sound like turd but it's a good idea in theory..

There is a pair of klipsch earphones that can work normally or as noise blockers
have been thinking about them for a while as a next pair.

i use skullcandy lowriders
theyer over the top headphones, but you can turn down one side or the other
so my right side is muted, yet i have brilliant sound on my left ear -

I used to cycle with headphones (not only for music but also handsfree for my phone), but my sweat killed a pair every month or so, so I stopped out of cost!
Now I'm waiting for the call to say my g/f has gone into labour I've started wearing them again... Almost had an accident when the standard iPhone ones fell out at the same time I had a gust of wind hit my disc wheel! I need some over the ear ones (and balls does not being able to Hear make you a worse cyclist which is what all the headphone hatred are suggesting, not looking over your shoulder is far worse than having headphones, and more common)

I ride with the standard iPhone earphones they are shit but they don't cancel out road noise and stay in relatively well which is just about all I need, plus if they're plugged into my phone then I can chat hands free!

hmmm i agree that it doesn't make you

hmmm i agree that it doesn't make you a bad cyclist but i dont feel safe riding with headphones in (sorry for double post but i hit the wrong key grrrr)

its all about urban ears
slick designs, beautiful details, all colours, almost no logo
plus nice features like iphone/hero/etc compliant mic and chain-ablility to listen to the same choons as your bredrin (not whilst cycling ideally) or bredwoman
nice price too...think £50 for the beauts on the left...can recommend

+1, plus when you're cycling with headphones, you get into a rhythm of looking over your shoulder every few "beats".

i use the B&O earphones at present and the monster italk cable/microphone/start stop button
works very well
def agree w khornight
wearing headphones is a lot less dangerous than never looking back over your shoulder
i was advised to try cycling with music to encourage me to look over my shoulder more

Try listening to The Locomotion for maximum safety.

today I have mostly been listening to the bike show

It's quite soothing riding without any sound at all.
the more you ride without listening, the less 'surprise' you get when car overtake you too fast.

does anyone have experiance with koss portapros? they've got good reviews, but i dunno if they'd be any good for cycling

There's a little audio device in my ears that I turn off as soon as you start mumbling.

I properly shit myself when a car stealthily passes me too close when I'm wearing headphones. I like music while riding but during rush hour I keep 'dem ears open.

Only use them for social rides myself. Fucking hate talking to cyclists

All you have to do is learn to look more often (and I mean a lots more), and position yourself accordingly so a near miss can be avoided.
-
• #248
If cars are taking you by surprise then you are not looking behind yourself enough.
One of the mottos of the cycle trainers is "no surprises"

Oh and squabble totally owned you there murts.
Looks pretty good. I'm sure I'd only want to use it in the absolute middle of nowhere though. Don't you feel like one of those chavs playing music through their phone?
