I'm currently running 42:18, which is a little on the spinny side but I quite like it. I'm going straight across central london, so it's good to get away from the lights quick enough and you often can't get to full speed before the next lights anyway. I think I'll go up to 44:18 when I sort out my cranks.

Just ordered 48T crank, so need to decide on 16, 17 or 18T.
Anyone know what I can have either side of a flip-flop hub using the same chain.

get an 18T or 19T, it will be uber spinny the first few weeks, but you'll get used to it eventually, I run 19 - 48 (soon to change the chainring for a 47 one).
just get a cog that's one teeth bigger, you won't have to worry if the chain isn't long enough/too long.

Im moving my ass from Detroit to flat as shit London, with a 48t ring up front.
So what say you? 16 or 17t cog?
In Cambridge, which is F _ L _ A _ T, I run 48/17 and it's perfect for me.

47x19 on my commuting and audax bike.
48x17 on my poseur bike.
Anything bigger just isn't practical for me.

Depends on the length of your dropouts/trackends.
1 tooth difference will alter wheelbase by about a quarter of an inch. So if you had an inch of adjustment on the rear wheel, you're probably OK with 4T difference. -

Just measure the wheel diameter. In inches of course.

48x15

I know that's how you find out the gear inches of a 1:1 ratio.. Which is why I asked about the iches on her specific penny farthing

49:19 here.
It's like 48:18, but with skid patches. And a bit spinnier.
-
• #392
Used to run 46/17 with Marathon Plus 25mm's... Now it's summer and I'm running 48/17 with Vredestein Ricorso 23's.

Sorry, I didn't realise yo were asking about a specific PF.
Bit stupid today. -

no worries, looking back on what I'd first written it wasn't particularly clear unless you knew about the person above's (unmentioned in the thread) penny farthing
-
• #395
49/18, seems about right to me...
-
• #396
No, you're wrong. That's the wrong gear ratio.
-
• #397
49/17 on one bike, 47/17 on the other... the 49 is a bit rough on the SF hills... but I'm getting used to it...
-
• #398
42/17 and i'm spinning fast, but i quite like it.
-
• #399
I've been riding 52/16, which is abit of a bugger away from lights going through town. About to change it up though. Legs complaining.

42:18. Fun spinny. Helps with the panniers too.
...What do you define as "fast" then?
