question regarding the macaframa movie, what sort of ratios were those guys running to be able to do those wheelies etc and skid so easily?
Or am I just really weak? #probablytrue

cogs cheaper than chainrings.
keep the 49 for when you can and want to skid the shit out of the world (more patches).49/16 is a big gear for town.
Cheers so you suggest perhaps a 49/18? I thought i read on here though its better to have both odd numbered?

49/19. Light enough for you to skid on comfortably and also have 19 skid patches. Odd cogs are better for those who aren't ambidextrous skidders. I'm running 50/19 which is a bit higher than 49/19, but the ratio allows me to accelerate when needed but also slow down quite easily too. Slight disclaimer though, you might find yourself spinning quite some but this will only happen if you start hitting around 20-25mph+. Maybe a tad less, I'm not too sure.
Also some part of skidding has to do with technique, leaning forward, etc.

sorry, read you wanted to go up a gear.
49/18 before 19, youll notice a big difference in a single tooth -

Thanks both.
I do find slowing quite tricky with current set up so will look into 49/18, 19 may be a little too spinny for me I guess from what you say Uoeno...

Been riding 49/17 but can barely hit 30 for a few secs, am wondering whether i should drop to 48/17 slightly lower ratio but same patch wise which doesnt really matter to me as I cant skid?

I'm on 49/18 and can skid like a maniac when I feel like it, I am bad at wheelies but they're definitely possible at this gear.

49/17 any good for central london?
-
• #2485
I'd go for something a little lower like 49/18 49/19

pros and cons?

53/11 downhill!

pros and cons?
Pros: spinning at a decent cadence, saving joints, slowing and speeding up easy enough etc.
Cons: Going over 30 mph is harder and more tiring that larger gears.

ok cool thanks for that, so18 or 19?
-
• #2490
19t! Unless you're an ambidextrous skiddah. And if you're bothered about having one more skidpatch.
-
• #2491
49/18 has 18 skid patches.
-
• #2492
Oops, I think I may have phrased it incorrectly, yeah - 49/19 has 19 skid patches. Soz for confusion.

I've recently gone up to 42/17 from 42/18. I know! Crazy right?!
-
• #2494
Fixed or ss?
-
• #2495
Fixed, but I'm not a skidder so I don't even have that excuse.
-
• #2496
Ah, fair enough. May I ask, why such a low ratio?
-
• #2497
Crappy knees, start-stop commute, still relatively new to FG, and a general stop-and-smell-the-roses attitude to cycling around London.

It's only mid to low 60's so nothing too tiny.

I'm running 49x19 and don't seem to have many skid patches.... what els could it be?
