If so, I'm glad it wasn't my turn this year (although it's interesting to see the definition of 'spinning' seems to have crept up from >100rpm to >120rpm to >150rpm; I assume this is down to all your time on the track?).

My favourite gear ratio was 48x14 this morning, and I know you'll be pleased to hear that the final 30min of my 2.5hr ride were done at an average of 112rpm (perhaps we could call this sub-spinning or something), although I was doing some oscillating between 108rpm and 132rpm. I was fucking soaked to the skin by the time I climbed off.

  • Go to the toilet before you leave next time then.

I thought about saying 100rpm first, but that's just an av cadence, so went for 150 as an arbitrary figure but could as easily be 130 I suppose. Tbh all this posturing just adds to the general feeling I'm getting from this forum: tedium. I think its time to go away again.

But I never left in the first place.

Contrary to Saturday evening forecasts, it was pissing down when I got up at 5am to get ready to go out, and all the forecasts said rain all day; so I went back to bed until 9am.

  • ^surely those 2 posts alone have alleviated your sense of tedium, Rob?

  • If you ride enough you'll adapt and be able to spin quicker, stay fresh and beast those hills you'd be walking. No bad thing at all.

    this.

Mr 52/15 would have to go around 28mph to be doing a moderate 100rpm (which is a good cadence to be aiming for on the road) it's risible to hear people saying that 70-80GI is "too spinny".

I'm getting to the point and think 46:16 is getting spinier. But there is no point in going higher as there is enough metal on the road to be avoided with a gear you can move on quicker rather than having pure top speed.

That said, training will make you go higher. Certain aspects of terrain will affect your choice, and of course bragging. :)

  • My fave all the time will be 46-17

  • 49 - 17 for me. Toyed with 49 - 15 for a while but, as always, everyone was right; My knees hurt and it wasn't any faster. So that comes out for the track only now.

  • 52-16 abit heavy should i jus changed my cog down?
    used to use 49-19

  • Rocking the 47x18 at the minute, spin central.

  • go with something with a little torque!

you get more torque in lower gears..

  • your all torque

  • Torque is cheap.

  • Trying 44x19, seems good for light trails/tow paths, hills and hangovers.

  • 48/17 for me, gets me up and down all the hills of Bristol no trouble!

  • 52/20

  • I prefer to brag about how low my GI is, not how high.

  • Only works if you also brag about your RPM

  • I think you'll find RPM is his own man.

  • 42.7GI bitches.

  • Wow - you must have awesome leg speed, etc

  • I chase a ball around with a stick on it.

  • currently on 46/16, thinking of trying 42/16 or 46/18 for better up hillness and sicker skidzzzzz

  • page 15 of what's your favourite gear ratio.
