Can't you get cheaper internal nipples from the likes of pillar?
-
• #828
internal nipples wont work with normal rims, the spoke holes are too wide. the rim has to have smaller holes specifically for internal nipples

whats the MDCC spoke of choice currently ? looking to build up a no frills basic track wheelset to get rid of some spare bits lying around the house on one track hubs vs rigida chrina

quality website
you can't actually order 80 spokes in the size you want from their ordering system -

meh ..... maybe you can but it isn't easy !

Cheapest place I have found and they turn up quickly after ordering. They come with brass nipples.

Not sure if this is the right place but I am looking to get some wheels to reasonable shape as they are horribly out of true, want to spend as little as possible. Cheapest way is to just replace the spokes as some cheap decent ones will only set me back about £18 inc. nipples.

^Rear rim is quite corroded but front is a nice shiny Mavic Ma2. Nipples are fucked and cannot budge so spokes will have to be cut and the wheel cannot be trued. Is this a good route to take? I have no proper wheel building experience, no proper tools, no wheel stand (make do with forks and tight brakes). Should I get a shop to tension them after? Are the rims fucked and not worth bothering about?
Is this too much effort and should I just go down another path (cold set frame use modern wheels, get second hand decent 126mm etc.)

Squirt some WD40 or better penetrating oil into a bottle cap, dab it onto the spokes at the nipple, spin the wheel then leave for 24h before you try turning any nipples. Use a 4-sided spoke key of the right size. I really like the spokey pro ones.
A rim is knackered when either the brake track is too worn away, it is badly bent or dented, or it is cracking around the spoke holes. Hold a straight edge against the brake track to assess wear there, clean it to look for cracking at the spoke holes.
Once you know the state of the rims, it's all about whether time or money is worth more to you, and whether you'd enjoy the effort. New 126mm hubs can still be found: http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dia-compe-ene-touring-rear-hub-quick-release-126-mm-oln-prod26578/ http://www.cyclebasket.com/m9b0s412p2680/ZENITH_Large_Flange_Classic_126mm_QR_Rear_Hub_

To interlace or not to interlace? I'm building up a 16" wheel with a large hub, so short spokes. It'll be 2 cross, but I'm wondering whether it's better not to bother interlacing the spokes - it'll be a pretty sharp bend where they cross if I do.
Thoughts, anyone?
-
• #838
If you're having doubts, don't. If you build it without interlacing and the spokes aren't touching where they cross, you've made the right decision.
-
• #839
Cheers, non-interlaced it is then. The front's interlaced, but the gap between the flanges on the front hub is miniscule, so the angles between the spokes aren't so pronounced.

Looking to build another set of wheels around a set of sturmey archer hub braked hubs. Aesthetically I'd like a shiny, quite square section rim. I was going to go for a pair of rigida chrinas or maybe sputniks, unless anyone can point me in the direction of something more suitable.

The Velo-Orange PBP / Raid rims are another option.

Both look like what i'm after, but what's the cheap man's option?

Sputnik, as you already identified. Hefty, but you can't be bothered about that if you're using hub brakes.

^^ Hmm, I think the polishing adds quite a bit of cost. Even the Halo ones are £40 a pop.

Nope, weight of the bike components are orders of magnitude smaller than the weight of myself.

Right then looks like i'll have to give up on shinyness. Sputniks it is.

sun cr18, CRC used to stock them in polished silver 700c but not anymore it seems.
I have them in black nmsw, look nice and a good value 23mm wide rim(22.5 external, 17.5 internal)

It's not obvious to start with, but you can.
I'm just you can also just call up and order over the phone.

I'm wondering about building a set of wheels for my folding bike.
As the spokes are short, the bike is already heavy, and the current rims are steel, worrying about the weight of the spokes doesn't seem worth it.
I have always previously used double butted ACI, as nothing seems to match them on value. But if I'm going for bog standard spokes is there anything better value for money.?
Cheers.
might try the royce nipples in the future for a front race wheel with those new hongfu 56mm rims, they only work with external nipples. 24 wouldnt be too expensive
