About to order mine. Did they build up OK based on 594 ERD?
In case it helps anyone further down the line, I also measured 594 ERD for the Jalco DRX6000 rims and the build worked out fine.

I've ordered some hubs and rims and now im looking for spokes. I used this calculator http://lenni.info/edd/ and got values of
Front: 297.5; RD: 295; RND: 296.7
I was going to use double butted ACI spokes, cyclebasket (anywhere cheaper) has 294,296,298. If I understand correctly I should round down to the correct size? So i should order 296 for the front and non drive side and 294 for the drive side?
EDIT: Sheldon Brown says go for the longer one. I'm confused now.
On a more aesthetic note, can i have silver wheels with a black groupset?

personally Id go for 296mm for both sides, I buy bags of 20spokes so it makes economic sense and 1mm either way is negligible, at least for a high spoke count anyway

has anyone any feedback on those jalco rims in use? do they build up round easily?

I'd go for 298 on the front and 296 both sides on the rear. Should get away with it.

Yep - it built up pretty easily.

I've just double checked and the spoke calculator I was using is set for 14mm nipples and the ACI spokes I was going to buy are 12mm nipples.
Do i need to add 2mm to my spoke lengths?
-
• #659
You'd need to know what assumption the calculator was using, and what the nipple manufacturer has done.

The DT one is good but has a smaller component library. Gives weights.

Spoke calculators tell you where the end of the spoke needs to be in relationship to the rim, the nipples are just holding the spoke in place and shouldn't affect spoke length.
DT Swiss add extra threads to their longer nipples so their calculator adjusts generously for difference, Sapim nipples have same thread length so a 16mm nipple and 12mm nipple has same thread length so no adjustment needed.

Anyone got any 288mm black DT Swiss Champions spare? I got some spokes with the hub I'm building and it turns out they are the wrong length by 2mm. (290mm)
I worked out the correct size is 287.5, but rounded to 288.

Morning. Following on from a recommendation in the road wheels thread, I am gathering bits and pieces for a build (my first) and wanted to check details with those more knowledgable.
The build is On One track hubs, front and rear both 32h, laced to Velocity A23's. These will be every day wheels for the commuter. I'm assuming 3 cross is the way to go and was hoping someone could recommend spokes (I'm happy to spend a bit more on quality if worthwhile). The spoke length calculator is telling me 290.4mm for the rear and 291mm for the front.
Anything I'm missing?
Cheers

For daily drivers, I suggest DT Alpine III if you don't mind the expense (about £35 including nipples and shipping). ACI are the budget choice, but at just under £20 it's not much of a saving unless you really don't have two farthings to rub together. To be honest, either spoke will probably outlast your front rim on a commuter bike, your £15 premium is buying a very small additional assurance against a broken spoke which is probably not going to happen anyway. Assuming you've got the calculation right, you can use 290mm all round.

Thanks for this. Those DT Swiss Alpine III's look seriously heavy duty. Would I notice any difference (in terms of weight) compared to something like Sapim Race, which I've found on sale at the moment?

You probably couldn't tell the difference if you lifted one of each type successively, you certainly won't notice it while riding.

Understood. Thanks again.

Just finished lacing my first wheel. hopefully its put together better than my photography skills.
somebody mind doing a sanity check on it for me. The masking tape marks the valve hole.

Are all similar points on the rim equidistant from the centre point of the hub axle? If so, it's fine.

From experience, is anyone able to confirm if the System Ex hub measurements are correct on Edd? The measurements are below.
Butters, I think you may have successfully used these in the past?
System Ex, rear
Left flange ø: 61.7 mm
Right flange ø: 61.7 mm
Centre to left flange: 28 mm
Centre to right flange: 28 mm
Spoke hole ø: 2.6 mmSystem Ex, front
Left flange ø: 61.7 mm
Right flange ø: 61.7 mm
Centre to left flange: 33.5 mm
Centre to right flange: 33.5 mm
Spoke hole ø: 2.6 mm -

Those numbers match up to the (On-One) Novatecs I have in my hand, so they should be right for your (System-Ex) Novatecs.

Is it retarded of me to be considering a carbon clincher for my rear wheel on my commuter fixed gear? It's not going to see a brake so no issues there, and it being carbon means corrosion isn't an issue.
Am I missing something here? I'm thinking 38mm deep, 28h oriental with cx-rays, just for the hell of it. I'm 70kg

If that's what you want, go for it.

The boring answer is "what improvement to you hope to gain". I'd have thought the concerns over going carbon for a comuter are:
- Impact damage to rim if you have a flat or hit pot holes (and whether its still safe after)
- theft
- cost (general and of replacement if 1. or 2. occur)
So if the above aren't an issue I'd say why not.... But then it also may just spontaneously compust in your face for lols - which carbon always does.
You're now making me think of getting one for my beater :s
- Impact damage to rim if you have a flat or hit pot holes (and whether its still safe after)
Anyone got 4 297mm Sapim Lazers? Would pay not to have to find the shop that stocks them. In London. Ta muchly.
