  • For 95 kilo, plus whatever your taking with you I'd go 36. Especially for daily commuting.

  • any other rim recommendations

  • More spokes the better mate. watch e'm sparkle. people worry too much about weight. pedal more - lose weight.

  • 36H all the way.

  • If you're commuting are you also going to have a bag? Personally I'd be tempted by 32h/36h. Or you could beef up the rear spokes by going for DT Alpine III. it'll cost a bit more though (especially with 32-38 or so spokes - altho I just spotted that Rose have them for £0.36 not sure what the postage is though).

You could also look at the Dyad. If it's for commuting they also come in a reflective version that is sort of ano grey in the daylight.

...oh and the vala vs 'tester section of the thread made me chuckle.

  • Hi, I'm an other person thinking of building wheels (first time) with on-one track hubs and jalco DRX6000 rims
Using this spoke calculator which has the rims on their data base. They say they have an ERD of 594.
Its calculates the spoke length as 287.5 mm for the front and 286.9 mm for the rear.
I hope this is right/helpful. Any thoughts?

I'm from Ireland so if I want to buy spokes from cycle basket I have to pay €15 money transfer charge. I had a look at spa cycles but the sapim leader (cheapest) are available in 288mm. Would 290mm be to long. I also havent contacted them yet so they may not take international card either.
Are there any other places you would suggest for cheap spokes
    Cheers

  • 290mm = 3.1mm too long for the rear, you'd run out of threads before taking up all the slack.

  • You could try Alpina spokes - double butted 14/17/14g for the same price as the Sapim Leaders. 144 288mm spokes in stock here.

  • ^ +1 for Alpina, ran them on my first wheel-build, which is still running fine 2 years later

This may be better for you, about €35 for 64 spokes + nipples. Note that Rosebikes don't include nipples with their spokes, you have to order them separately.

Skinny spokes, lots of wind up, first build? May not be the best plan.

How was it 'vs'? I asked a question, he replied, and I've taking it onboard and will act accordingly.

Meh, rule no. 5. My first wheel build was with DT Super Comps, which are very similar dimensions to ACI Alpinas. OK, recommending Sapim Lasers or DT Revos for a first-timer might be a bit harsh, but I've never found Alpinas to be too bad when it comes to wind up. OK, I've only built one wheel with Alpinas, but I certainly don't remember it being an issue.

Besides, the DT Comps you recommended are 2.0/1.8/2.0 (in metric). The Alpinas are 2.0/1.7/2.0. Hardly going to make that much difference.

  • the on one track hubs should be the same dimensions front and rear IIRC.

    17g ≠ 1.7mm, so something is wrong.

DT comp are indeed 1.8mm in the middle, 17g is 1.42mm. A 1.8mm wire is about 2.5 times stiffer in torsion than a 1.42mm wire. For a nipple friction which winds up a DT Comp by 45°, a 17g spoke will wind up about 112°. A 1.5mm DT Revolution will wind up 94°, since (1.8/1.5)^4 is 2.07

  • Good point, well made! Alpinas aren't 14g/17g/14g. But they are 2.0/1.7/2.0...

  • thanks very much for the help and advice guys.

  • the on one track hubs should be the same dimensions front and rear IIRC.

Same diameter, but the flange spacing is closer on the rear. Might tip you down a spoke length increment on the rear. Assuming Mentats has calculated correctly, 287mm all round will work, or 286mm if he buys even numbers.

  • is this the old version? i am sure one of them has same dimensions

  • Yes, one of them has the same dimensions, but the other one doesn't :-)

Never seen a track hub apart from the original Goldtec which had the same flange spacing front and rear.

  • Jalco DRX6000 rims ... have an ERD of 594.

Is this confirmed anywhere else? Going to measure mine tonight so will see if I get close.

  • I dunno, that's just from that spoke length calculating site. I dunno if it's right. It would be great if you could measure yours.
@ tester. Should I should use 286 instead of 288? I thought it was better to go for slightly longer spokes than shorter one.

  • ^ ok, measuring about to start will see what they come out as.

  • P.s. anyone seen my red spoke key?

Always go for the shorter spoke, a few turns of thread unengaged is within the design parameters, a spoke shank bottoming out in the nipple threads is disastrous.
