  • Faulty? Did I ever say it's faulty? Don't be silly pal. It's 3.25mm Spokey but I think rosebikes sent me 3.30mm spokes instead because I used that green spoke key above to built the wheels. And that green one is 3.30mm.

Just found a way to use the Spokey properly

  • Front: 740g
    Rear: 900g
Spoke key: somewhere in my room, so no tension yet.

Will be trying to do tubeless later this week.

  • The is the Ryde pulse comp expained.
    Pulse comp - narrow
Pulse comp 5mm off set for the rear only -wide
    Pulse comp symetric - wide

    three versions now ugo.

Miche Primato hubs can be had in 28H front 32H rear fixed free though. I have some. BLB do a muber of single hubs (own brand) in 28H and 32H rear. They also do those Victore hubs or however it's spelt in singles. All they do is pretty much fixed only hubs.

Sapim make a very good 4 sided spoke nipple key. It's my favourite as the Park one can distort nipples. I use the Park key to the first few turns as its quicker then switch to the Sapim key when the tension rises.

  • @dicki or anyone available

I'm keen to swap out my current rear hub with a new hub but need some wheel building help and stand.

Would prefer to work at your place rather than mine as can do it in peace.

  • pm'ed

  • I am pretty sure the answer to this is no, but asking because someone normally knows better than me.

I want some high flange track hubs with 20/24 or 24/28 drilling and cup and cone bearings.

I can't find new hubs that meet this spec can, anyone think of some?

  • cup and cone bearings

    Why?

  • Easier to service at home. Getting cartridges into hubs without deforming them can be daunting for people who've not had much practice.

  • Well, its a bit of an abstraction but all cartridge bearing track hubs seem fundamentally the same to me. CNCed shell, with press fit bearings and an axle. So my take is that most of the price difference between PW hubs and novatec hubs represents PW's value as a positional good. The sensible part of my brain rejects paying that mark up.

So the question is really verifying if I have done my research properly - If there are some fantastic cup and cone track hubs out there that I am not aware of, I might well end up buying those over a cartridge hub.

Otherwise its just a utility vs positional good decision on what to buy.

  • The only cup and cone worth buying are Dura Ace and Record, but I am not sure of the hole count. Otherwise yes, Novatec are good as gold

  • DA 9000 are available in 24 and 28h I believe.

  • We are talking track hubs here.... AFAIK the 9000 track don't even exist... the dogs are still the 7600 with big flanges

  • We are talking track hubs here....

    I missed that bit.

  • Yep,

And whilst 7600 would be ideal, I don't like the aesthetic of lacing a 60mm carbon tub 32 or 36H

    Thanks for your comments Ugo

  • 7600 or 7710 hubs in low spoke counts would be lovely for some indoor track wheels, but only sponsored riders get them. Novatecs are cheap, available and work well. Bearing replacement isn't hard with some basic tools, if you're obsessed by the drag of the rubber seals on the stock bearings you can get SKF E2 energy efficient bearings with shields rather than seals for optimal indoor performance, about £20 for 4 bearings to do a pair of hubs http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p7911/SKF+E260002ZC3+Energy+Efficient+Shielded+Deep+Groove+Ball+Bearing+10x26x8mm/product_info.html

  • Are mack hubs loose bearing?
    Ignore me

  • LBS reckon "about £35, £36 if it all goes together alright" to build a 32 spoke, 3x front wheel (plus spokes and nipples at +/-£1.20 ea).

Seems a bit strong to me...

  • £36 labour for one wheel is certainly at the upper end of the market.

  • Well, it's a bit like paintjobs, or other things which are labourious but people expect to be cheap - you get what you pay for etc. But if the shop don't seem to know what the price for a wheelbuild actually is, or if it'll 'go together ok', then I'd choose another shop. Seems they may not build a lot of wheels.

    How much does Arup charge?

  • How much does Arup charge?

£25 per wheel plus spokes from 40p ea. for ACI

  • Voilà.

  • and BMC for their OTP track bikes.

Wonder if Evans could get the wheels only

  • Agreed but I had circa £twenty-something in mind, being as it's a front and I'm in London's famous Suffolk.

The last wheels I had built were from DCR and he just builds wheels, so I certainly wasn't expecting a general LBS to be more expensive.

TBH there isn't much choice around here if you're not OTP, but for that money I might as well post my wheels to get built, or get a stand: what's the worst that can happen...

  • Shame he doesn't deal by mail.

  • 21p ACI DBs (inc nipples) from Cyclebasket plus £5 for 3 supermarket ales to motivate you to DIY?
