  • 33 or 35 is pretty wide already, the others are full on fat bike territory.

  • sounds reasonably. you know how you can get carried away when looking at shiny new stuff.
where's the cheapest place to get a set of p35?

  • Is there something I have missed or better prices somewhere?

Kris Holm XC rim, 38mm wide, £39 each, £96.60 pair inc. shipping to .dk

Not listed on their sister site http://www.unisalg.dk/ but it might be worth asking them before ordering from UK

  • Washers are needed if the rim wall is thin. Nisi rims are probably on the light/thin side.

Thanks ugo. Looking forward to googling 'nipple washer'...

  • Kris Holm XC rim, 38mm wide, £39 each

    830g each!!!

  • Meh. Super light rims that size would only be 200g less, and he's using 700g tyres with, presumably, 200g tubes, so we're not likely to be concerned with slightly less than a pound of total mass added to the bike.

There are several types... if your rim is box type, you need flat rings

  • Compact V section ... assume the oval ones are more appropriate?

  • Compact V section ... assume the oval ones are more appropriate?

Yes, but they rarely fit through the rim bed hole without filing... I can assure you that filing 64 oval washers is NOT fun

Can't really live with machined sidewalls, the weight, and 36h only. thanks though.

  • Just put a new (to me) pair of wheels in the Serotta, HED Ardennes rims, White Industries front hub and a Powertap rear.

Silly I know, but very impressed at how absolutely true they are when spun - I've got used to rims having a little wobble/hop in them it would appear!

  • I've ordered some novatec hubs and some h+son tb14s rims. They are 32 hole and i intend to build them 3 cross. I was just about to order some ACI double butted spokes from cyclebasket, but wondered if it was worth spending a little bit more on something else?

Wheels to be used for commuting with lightly loaded panniers and weekend rides.

  • ACI are as good as anything else the same gauge, the only good reason to pay more is for more aeros like CX-Ray or more strength like Alpine III.

  • tester (and anyone else who knows) -

    BHS C472w or Flo 30?
and is the BHS C472w just a Kinlin XC-279?

  • is the BHS C472w just a Kinlin XC-279?

Yes, it even says so on the BHS website.

  • ^Lol

and depends on use, for training wheels, bhs/kinlin are fine (fyi you can get them for £20 plus £20 postage from taiwain ebay) if you want to race on them too flo30's seem to be worth the extra dolla

Not bothered about aero, I'll have a look at the alpines I quite like the sound of a stronger wheel.

  • Finally got a rim for my Powertap (Archetype). 28 hole, I've heard 2 cross is best way to go with PTs, anyone built one up before?

  • Finally got a rim for my Powertap (Archetype). 28 hole, I've heard 2 cross is best way to go with PTs, anyone built one up before?

Yes... for 28 with a large flange hub 2 cross is best. That said, the new PTaps G3 are not as big as they used to be, so you are probably OK with a 3 cross too, if you so wish

  • Are carbon clinchers with a braking surface worn past safe usability with a brake too worn to build up to track hubs and use without a brake?

  • For you? You will probably get Indra'd...

  • Would not trust it with high pressure tyres that's for sure.

  • I don't plan on high pressure tyres, I'm just trying to find an older corima clincher rim to build on to a track hub to sit nicely with my 4 spoke.

  • Anyone know a source for HED ardennes rims only? Kinoko have just one, i was hoping to build up a high-end road wheelset...
