  • Looking to build a set of carbon tubs, using chinese carbon rims. Was looking at the hubs and so far the only option is a pair of phil woods, but they only have a set of 20h in black. Ideally it would be 20/24h. Any suggestions?

  • Finding a 24 hole rear track hub should be easy enough. Then just use any 20 hole road hub for the front, and fit a track skewer. Job done.

  • Get 48h Phil and use half the spoke holes and then save weight with the drillium! ;)

  • I'm also planning on building up some crabon Dimi.

I've been looking at ordering these. I think Dammit has experience in ordering from this company. They are bolt on Novatecs and can be drilled from 20 to 36 holes. About £40 for the pair if their ebay prices are anything to go by.

  • Planet X or BDOP cycling have 20/24 hubs cheap.

  • Meh. I want QUALITY! Can get Phil Woods from Japan, as I know someone who can bring them over for me.

  • Not so sure about Novatecs tbh.

  • Wouldn't it be cheaper to get Phils from 'Murica?

  • Thanks for your advice though, appreciate it.

  • Rob possibly, but are you going to Murica sometime soon?
Track superkmarket is reasonably priced. $415 for a set of Phils

  • YSB might be able to help out...

The spoke hole alignment will be wrong.

Royce or Victoire if you insist on pissing away money for no good reason, but Novatec will do the job just as well. Upgrade to SKF E2 bearings if you want that last fraction of a Watt indoors.

  • Fair point.

Also I'm going to build road carbon clinchers. Would DT Swiss 240s (20/28h)be a good idea?

  • From the polo wheels thread...

I built a wheel using linseed oil last weekend. It was great. It made the whole process much smoother and checking the tension a few days later I found it bang-on. I have a 500ml bottle so lots to spare. I can bring it to polo if anybody want to decant some?

    And it smells nice.

I've been using Fenwicks white PTFE grease; is linseed oil a good budget option for lubing spoke threads?

  • Linseed oil will dry out and 'set'. I think the boiled ones set a bit harder; linseed oil is the agent in putty that lets it set when it drys*.

*doesn't really dry out but forms a polymer when exposed to air.

  • dimi - mack superlights, all the way, as good as phils but they're lighter

  • but they never respond to their emails and there's like half a year wait to get hold of the hubs

  • ^ this is true

Where's the best place to get those bearings Tester?

  • seems like there's lots on ebay

  • Lots of ze best?

  • Why not Mack hubs?

Their quality is supposed to be comparable to phil, they're lighter, come with custom drilling and colours, plus they're about 1/2 the price.

Just seen this, they responded to my friend in under 12 hours.
