Re. Earlier comment on Kinlin rims brake wear, they definitely are softer than Mavic; managed to go through a rear rim before an Open Pro on the front even had visible wear
-
• #10078
That’s interesting, which Kinlin rim and were the brake pads the same compound?

XR22T and Wiggle Lifeline pads. Got about 4 years of autumn/spring commuting and riding where I also have a winter and a ‘nice’ bike

Has this video been posted here before?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MLyw7LiCLc&t=4026s
It reminded me of the tying and soldering technique that you don’t see much of anymore. Was it ineffective? Can it be done on bladed spokes? Why isn’t it done anymore?

I have a set of wheels built with d771/772sb hubs. I'd like to keep them to use on a new frameset which is 12mm thru front and rear. They're currently running qr. Is there a kit which will convert them, or is it not worth the faff over replacing the hubs/wheels.
They're not particularly special wheels, I'd just like a second pair for the new bike and would rather not buy a whole wheelset. -

To add to this, what's the build to get a solid and cheap but light set of 650b wheels? Are d791 sealed and reliable? And what are the 'go-to' 650b or 700c alu rim for light gravel/off road? The wheels on my new bike are 2kg which seems absurdly heavy to me. That's formula hubs and wtb i23 light rims.

You'll need to swap the rear axle too, surely the 12mm frame is 142 spaced, the QR will be 135. Simple job to do
-
• #10085
Yeah, 142 rear. I'm struggling to find an exact adapter/conversion kit.
Oh wait, is this it:

You can find them here too

Or AliExpress if you want it cheap and don't mind waiting -

Thanks, I'll try and work out which front I need as there seem to be a few options. The hubs came from AliExpress years ago, I do just wonder whether it's worth paying £60 for some new 791 hubs and relacing the wheels. Do they have the same dimensions as the 771/772?
Edit: thanks, sorted, found a UK seller on eBay after multiple attempts using different keywords.

kinlin xr 31 disc
you can buy the hunt 34 rim alone: https://eu.huntbikewheels.com/collections/rims/products/hunt-34-aero-wide-disc-rim
(but I dont think it is faster than the kinlin xr31 rim as the hunt testing was done with a 20 spoke front wheel.)
also the hunt 34 rim is not 34mm tall but 32,5mm so a bit of a misleading name...
a third candidate is the aforce al33 rim if you can find it.

On lacing patterns, I’ve read that radial lacing isn’t a good idea for rear drive-side.
But Zipp 101 wheels have 20h rear with radial drive and 1x non-drive side lacing. They have good engineers, so why have they decided to do this?
-
• #10090
They couldn't design front hubs or quick releases that work, don't assume anything.
Mavic do it too.

Anyone have any idea where I'd track down some 650b Pacenti Brevet rims in 32h? They seem like the best rim-brake option in this size, but seem to be out of stock in all the normal places.
If there's a Kinlin alternative in silver would be good to know. VO and Velocity options all seem to be "touring" spec (~650g). Soma El Nino might work but they're grey ano.

I'm looking for some cheapish 451 rims for a tiny Korean city bike. Can't seem to find much below £35.

Might be worth reaching out to Pacenti. I think from my email to them a while ago, they're expecting a restock soon. They were quite responsive.

The xr31 exists as 650b. Spa have some.

• #10095
why have they decided to do this?
Because they couldn't be arsed to design their wheel properly?
When Mavic started doing it a couple of decades ago, they proposed that radial gave better lateral stiffness on the side which is always weak on that front, and the hub shell was more than stiff enough in torsion to let the NDS spokes deal with drive torque without excessive wind up. While these things are theoretically true, the effect is vanishingly small compared with the correct design for highly dished wheels which have torque loads on the side with the poor bracing angle, which is to put more spokes on that side.

in silver
Oh.

• #10097
Get some long reach brakes and buy 406 rims. I went that way (eventually) with my Sillgey.
-
• #10098
It's got canti studs, so not an option, unfortunately.
-
• #10099
Cut 'em off.
Sorry, there's just such a lack of choice in the 451 range.

Thank you mate
Thanks, that also makes sense.
Have ordered rim, spokes, nipples and tape. Hopefully it all works out.
