  • Anyone have a hope freehub body 11spd going spare?

unlike everyone else i don't LOVE the buzz, so wouldn't mind something compatible/cheaper

  • Put more grease in it

  • I need a freehub body first!

  • I’m gearing up for a build on Hope Pro 3 rs-sp aero straigh-pull hubs. I’d like an aluminium rim-brake rim. Thinking:

    • Alforce AL33
    • Hed Belgium+
    • Kinlin xr26t

AL33 looks like a great option, but they are expensive at £140/rim and I think they’ve stopped producing them. So replacement rims might be hard to find. The Heds are very nice. I have a pair and have been impressed with the finish on them. They seem worth the £140/rim. The Kinlin xr26t looks to have most of the attributes of the Hed rim but at £40/rim.

Has someone with xr26t rims share a long-term review?

Am I missing a good, wide 700c rim from my list?

  • Has someone with xr26t rims share a long-term review?

I've not got them but I've built up a couple of pairs for people and they're still going strong after a few years and the owners are happy. I thought the braking surface on the rim versions I built up were wearing quickly in a photo I saw them in but was assured it was just the light and all is well.

  • I have some Al33 on RS4 hubs and really like them, not sure why you would think the Belgium + are ‘worth’ £140 (I read this as implying the Al33 aren’t worth it). I have some xr31t (also on RS4) and I’d be hard pressed to tell the difference!

Ryan Builds Wheels offers a wide alloy rim which they sell as ‘RBW Sprint’ at £60 which you might also consider, it’s similar to the kinlin but has a welded joint, 30mm deep and available with offset rear.

  • Thanks @snottyotter.

@190-215GPa I own the Belgiums so I can feel the value in my hand – the finish is very impressive; I haven’t seen the Al33, but I like the spec and they look good. Thanks, I’ll check out the RBW sprint.

  • I haven’t seen the Al33, but I like the spec and they look good.

They're very nice. I think they're worth the money, unlike the Belgiums, which I don't think are. Whether either are significantly better than the XR26T is another story altogether and one where I suspect YMMV.

Don't be tempted by Velocity Quill rims, which are also in roughly the same category. They're great rims, right up to the point where you try to fit tyres on them, at which point you discover that the centre bead wheel isn't deep enough, and fitting any sort of tyre involves vast amounts of tears and swearing, as does getting tubeless tyres to seat.

  • These are the RBW Sprint. Profile is more rounded than the kinlin but less than the Al33, finish is textured not smooth like the kinlin. Tried to show the offset rear. Think they are only available in black.

Maybe also consider Pacenti Forza (although said to be overpriced for what they are).

  • You can get yourself a pair of my ARKANE 30's. 20mm internal 30mm tall. Tall breaking surface and welded seam. Same factory that makes A force rims.
Quality is up there with Easton, Hed and the like.

That sprint rim isn't bad. Quite narrow at 18mm.

I have a 20/24 pair you can have for £100

  • That looks good. Can’t find info online though.

I looked at the Forza’s and like the look of them. But the xr26t looks very close and much cheaper. Is there a big gap in quality?

  • I’ve messaged you. Sounds good.

  • Do you have them available in higher spoke counts? And a diagram of the cross section?

  • Those sound good and excellent price. I believe the Sprint rim is also manufactured in the Aforce factory.

  • Complete newbie to wheel building here,
I've got a 24" 600c Mavic Cx18 36h rim with a Mavic 501 front hub that I need to build for a lo pro build but unfortunately I have no idea which spoke length I would need !.
Is there any websites that could possibly give me any info as to which length I would need ?
    Sorry for the silly question.

  • i just used this and it was pretty useful:

  • that's perfect! thank you

  • Is there a better value 650b rim brake rim than the thorn ones at sjs? Ideally silver too.

  • Velocity do something. Velo Orange do the Diagonale. I have some experience with the latter: they’re strong and most importantly ... extremely shiny.

I actually have a 32h Diagonale 650b wheelset to sell now. The front hub is a Shimano, rear is silver Novatec (10 or 11sp - I’d have to check). Spokes are Sapim Race, nipples are Sapim brass. I also have a spare non-dynamo front wheel (polished Novatec again) which needs bearings. #shamelessplug

  • I have a very basic wheel building stand that only really fits QR wheels. Is there a method/adapter to hold a 12x100mm thru axle wheel?

  • Ryde Zac 421 - rrp £20. only seen them in black though

  • Use a thru axle to qr converter while you're building the wheel.

  • Soma Weymouth
    Velocity A23
Ryde Andra, don't see any silvers though
