  • see above.

  • Yeah wrong word then, I know now, cheers.

  • @islipaway:

what size tyres are those - they look sexy but super tight at the back...

Session 700 28s doubt I could get bigger cause of the brake bridge. Very tight on polo gear and less so riding gear... 18 vs 16, 16 is pretty far back 18 about the middle.

  • What did you do to strip your frame? Just nitromoors and lacker it?

  • Just cracked the front rim on the stock wheels from a tiny curb I accidental hit. O well, new wheels in the post, was going to upgrade them eventually anyway.

  • Apologies for bringing up an old thread but i'm getting mighty confused with exactly what replacement BB I need!

I'm keeping the standard FSA Vero cranks on my Fuji but replacing the chainring. I know I need to replace the BB to get a 42mm chainline because of the dishing on the standard chainring but which do i need?

So far, through reading this thread and elsewhere I think I need as a basic replacement a Shimano UN54 68 x 107 JIS BB. Could someone who has done a similar replacement offer their advice?

    Cheers.

  • Heh, I'm going to reactivate the old stock wheels on my new polo bike. Let's see how long they last. :)

  • Well, the chainring is dished inwards, ie. towards the centre of the bike,

so a new undished chainring is going to sit furthur out, so you would need a shorter BB to compensate, or space out your rear sprocket with a few washers to make up the 3mm or whatever the difference is...

edit: so if the stock bb is 103, get a 101?

  • In your post further up and the following post from ile, he recommend a 107 JIS as a replacement to the original 103 **ISO **to get the right chainline

So i'm under the impression that if Fuji had used a JIS BB in the first place with the original dished chainring it would have been 110mm, hence changing the chainring to a non dished one would push the chainline 3mm away from the frame. Therefore requiring the BB width to reduce by 3mm to bring the chainring the required distance closer to the frame for the right chain line.

Sorry if that sounds like nonsense. The whole ISO/JIS is is confusing the hell out of me. I'm guessing from your posts further up you eventually replaced just the chainring and BB as opposed to the whole lot. What BB did you use?

  • Rather than mixing ISO and JIS you'd be better served by leaving said BB / crank arrangement as it is and living with a chainline that is out. Sure as hell didn't make any difference for me.
Maybe I get a bit more chain wear, but who knows. The original chainring is so poor anyway you'll probably get smoother transmission with a decent chainring that is 2mm out.

  • Ben P,

i also read my old post, and as far as i can tell it was nonsense,

i have a fuji track here - and the chainring is dished inwards towards the centre of the bike...
this would mean a regular straight chainring, would sit furthur out, ie/ give a bigger chainline measurement, i dont know by how much exactly, if its 42 ish as standard, a different chainring might increase the measurement to 45 ish or 46ish.

so either a shorter BB is needed, or space out the rear cog to the same chainline.

i never ended up doing anything with mine, my chainring is round like pringles are round, but i haven't been arsed to sort anything out yet.

  • The easiest way i can see to do it, is space out the cog a little.

or replace the whole chainset with something more conventional - = £££

  • Anyone knows the difference in sizes between 2007 and 2008 headsets for the fuji track? I reckon mine's knackered as its grinding when you turn side to side. I've taken it out, cleaned and regreased it without much improvement, so probably looking at a replacement.
    Ta,
    NSDuke

  • Cheers for the advice. I've got a pringle like chainring and a bb that sounds like its gargling gravel so i think i might just replace the lot. My bike has been neglected for too long!

  • Alright,

so I replaced a stock BB and fitted the one vélo libre recommended (68-107mm), thank you very much

    that's what I've found inside

  • bahhhh don't listen to me. ever.

my advice was to last_caress, who told us his bb was a 68-107.

it should be alright if the cranks are jis, only 2mm out which can be fixed with spacers on cog or sprocket.

  • New(ish) wheels, much better.

and prototype carbon fibre mudguard ;-)

  • Just to awaken the thread - anyone got 56 they don't want? 08 or 09 please.

If not I'm only going to go and buy a new complete and sell the bits so I'll pay good maney for frame only.

    Cheers

  • I'll join in the search, has anyone got a junior version to sell?

  • Quite tempted to try flat bars now, was worried it would look a little cack, i seem to ride on top of the stock drops all the time anyway.

    Hmm

  • Forget about how it would look, how it'll ride is far more important.

  • True, it was more of a how i will look rather than how it will look. I do need to find what works best though, you're right.

Is that why you're always hanging our in bike porn/anti porn?
