^ I aksed this question a while back.

The normal way to track stand is with your leading foot forward (as in the foot you prefer to skid with, normally the dominant side of your body) with the wheel tilted to whichever side that is.

ie for me, I trackstand with my right foot forward, with my front wheel tilted to the right. therefore the wheel never comes close to the leading pedal.

I don't think I've ever met someone who does it your way, with the wheel crossing the leading foot... surely you'd find it easier... your'e essentially doing it switch at the moment, you goofy fool!

Goofy fool though I am, I think all the BMX riders I know would consider right foot back, left foot forward regular. It's the back foot that does the work for hopping and stuff. When you skate regular you put your left foot at the front. And to trackstand you want the bike to be rolling up the camber of the road, ergo, in the UK, turning to the right. It matters not I suppose, so long as it isn't called mungo

  • fair point. well, some tips to increase the gap between toe and wheel:

    1) get shorter length cranks (165mm as opposed to 170)
    2) go clipless (this worked for me)
    3) buy forks with more rake
    4) fit a 650c front wheel
    5) angle feet down to reduce their profile against the wheel (this also works well)

I ride my bmx right foot back, and twist towards the right. On a fixed wheel i track stand and skid with the right foot forward and tilt to the right.

  • Just take a taxi everywhere. I never get toe overlap in Lundun's famous black cabs.

even with the rear-facing seats folded down and occupied?

  • Im thinking of getting one of these Wilkinson Speedway frame & forks to ride on the street.

I wanted to run the standard speedway forks for nippy steering and barspinability. (forgive me)

But problem is oodles of toe over lap.

Now I know a lot of people riding proper track bikes must face the same kind of issues, and was just wondering if its that much of a big deal, and how much exactly is too much.

  • It's only an issue for low speed turns.. I never do anything at low speed so no issue. :P

  • I have no toe overlap at all with my frame!!

  • no big deal you will hardly even notice it

  • I was going to say: get a fork with more rake, but that would ruin the barspins.

650 front wheel? And/ or shorter cranks (depends how much an oodle is)?

I ride a conversion with plenty of clearance, so forgive me if this is misleading advice.

  • I have quite a lot as I have really big feet but it's not a major issue. Has given me a few slightly hairy moments mind but nothing too close to disaster.

  • I resorted to getting a pair of Park Tools cable cutters and going at my toes last Monday.

  • I get toe overlap but its cool!

You get used to it at the lower speeds and after a while you don't notice it so much.

  • Interesting prices on the Archie Wilkinson site. Why does everything in the cycle speedway world seem so cheap. Would have expected the opposite as it is a very niche thing isn't it?
Agree it could make quite a good street bike (although they must be on the small side looking at the frames/wheels)

Tempted to buy one and ride round and round my pond to get into the spirit of it.

  • if it just touches your toe at horizontal then ok, but if it is hitting an inch or 2 then thats too much!

  • How much toe-overlap is too much? Its all about pedal overlap.

Those cranks look waaaaay long. Get shorter cranks.

  • it'll ride like shit on the street, unless you corner like a speedway rider.

but don't let that stop you buying a bike that's unsuitable for the purpose, it doesn't seem to bother most people on here.

  • i have loads of toe overlap on my pista, as its only a 50cm frame, but it only becomes a bit hairy when riding very slow, which is only when weaving traffic really. small toeclips might help? either that or those batshit crazy tiny shoes chinese old school women wear?

  • ^ urgh, that is vile.

Can you define 'ride like shit' a little more clearly. I've had two bikes with toe overlap both where highly manoeuvreable in traffic, went like the clappers and one was pretty decent on a long run (100 miles).

  • Yeah I got fucking pissed at my pista (heheh) with the toeverlap. It was too small for me though.

Fannypack, you've been riding fixed for a good while, so I reckon it shouldn't be a problem for you. When you're struggling with getting used to fixed riding, toeclips/clipless pedals, AND toeverlap at the same time, that's a bit dodgy.

  • Seing as barspins are generally at slow speeds then it might be more of a consideration.
Platforms and powergrip style straps with short cranks FTW.

  • asking "how much toe overlap is too much?" is like asking "how much vodka is too much?"

it's too much when you fall over.

  • Finally, some sense in this thread. :)
