  • They cost more than Berthoud now?
I've always considered them a slightly downmarket version of Berthoud and Honjo.

  • They are definitely not as well made as Bertoud, I have had a couple pairs of each and both velo orange failed, Bertouds are still going strong.

  • Interested in buying them if you can't find a swap

  • I just bought some of the city ones from Condor (which seems to be only place that had them anymore), so will be selling the other ones. I need to find all the fittings first - they were on a frame with proper eyelets so didn't use any of them. I'll try and remember to PM you when I do.

  • Thank you!

  • I just bought some of the city ones from Condor...

I'm glad you mentioned it: I was after some City in gunmetal.

Just checked their website and they have some shop soiled/B-grade for £60!

  • Yes, that's what I got. Which is a pretty good deal assuming they're not too soiled when they arrive. I have @coldharbour to thank for finding them for me - Condor don't seem to show up in google searches and everywhere else appears sold out.

  • I called to check: a ding or a scratch, but nothing too serious.

Should be here tomorrow, so fingers crossed...

  • I have GB. When I took them to a shop to get them fitted (mistake, btw) the mechanic didn't seem to know what to do and asked another mechanic who said that they were "copies of the VO ones".

The main complaint seems to be that they don't come with the requisite hardware for fitting, and if the shop don't have the right bits they are liable to bodge.

I've since removed them and re-fitted myself, and they are rock solid now.

TL, DR: make sure you get the bits you need to fit them.

  • Looking at getting some GB guards for my crosscheck running 700x42 tyres and not sure if I should get 50mm or 60mm?
    Thoughts anyone?

  • I have some 700x42 marathon supremes under 60mm GB guards. They work nicely, although are quite flexy due to the compact frame geometry. I'm having to add a second stay on the rear.

  • Post pics when done please!

  • 50mm should be enough. I run 38c tyres under 45mm guards and it fits well. I used to run 28c tyres under the same guards and it looked a bit gappy. For the same reason, I think 42s under 60mm guards might look a bit off unless they're really knobbly tyres. Both should work fine though.

  • 37c Voyager Hypers are only just covered by 50mm GBs.

Admittedly, the Hypers are quite large for the claimed size.

Conversely, 35c Kojaks are adequately covered by 45mm SKS Chromoplastic.

  • Been using some crud3s for the last few months and they are very good.

  • Ah yeah. For reference my 38c's are Pasela tourguards on a 17mm internal rim, guards are 45mm Handsome Mud Butlers.

  • Anyone know if the Crud 3 mudguards work okay with a Specialized Allez? I don't have any eyelets on the carbon fork. Also 25mm tyres.

  • About to attempt something like @hamrack in that I find the single stays on GBs mean the rear guard wobbles all over the shop on my son's v. compact Islabike. Has anyone tried to just add two of the GB-supplied gripper things into the same bolt, one on top of another? Does this work OK? I need to know doubly as I want to do something similar on an upcoming reconfigure of my touring rig (on that I want the extra stay right at the front of the longer version front guard to mount a light without having to mount it on a front rack). For which I better ask all: am I kerazy to think 35mm Pasela will fit fine into 40mm GBs?

  • The extra stays arrived today. I was thinking of fitting one on the outside and one on the inside (with a nut). I haven't got as far as thinking about clearance...
    Will investigate and report back!

  • Well my clearance thing is a side issue! Thanks, I look forward to seeing what you come up with. One each side seems sensible!

  • Sorry, I meant the clearance of the inside mounting rather than tyre under the mudguard!

  • will I fit 38c tyres under the PDW Full Metal Mudguards (wider version)?

  • I make the internal width 42mm.

Condor might still have some shop-soiled and discounted City left.
