  • Never really been a fan of the GH fork.

But that aside, the beauty of the BMW v1 is that it matches the rear stays (and now your bars too).

For now...If I use the bike for touring again there will be a whole different set up again. :]

  • something like this right?

  • The fact is. That if fork mounted bottle cages, disc brake caliper mounts etc are desired. The only viable option is to customise the excisting fork.

Unless there's a OTP fork with the correct trail, ATC length, bottle mounts, disc caliper mount, and appearance, out there.

  • Funnily enough I will be using tri-bars again....but I'm using a custom 'Fred bar'...which mounts to the steerer and allows the tri-bars to be set higher and further back for comfort. :]
With either flat bars with cane creek ergo 2 bar ends or Mary bars as the main handlebar.

And possibly a mini rack to support the handlebar harness set up. :]
    Ok...forget the wound ups!

  • im well confused about the gangsta.
so ed and BRP have a different version? the geometry seems so drasticly different.

The gangster comes in a weird selection of geometrys. Probably mention in this thread.

Sorry to keep sticking my oar in. But I'm thinking you have a clever fork/bar mounted bag in mind here. Cuz the combination of tri bars blocking top access, and needing to have side access to the fork mounted bottles. Is going to cause a headache.

  • they are different versions and also different sizes that probably make them look so different.

i wanted to get a disc tab put on a while ago, but read somewhere that the forks failed in testing so never went through with it. i may get v brake bosses welded on, or if i get some money the enve cyclocross fork

Well the tri-bars don't really block anything as they're not wide enough. The harness sits infront of the headtube, and the bottles are on the sides of the fork, so it should all work in sweet harmony....I think. :]

I have every faith in my ability to bodge and modify things to work around each other. :]

  • Well, I'm sure most of you are aware of my perfectly hideous BMW Gangsta that people kept shouting "GET A POMPINO" instead of your usual "DO A SKID".

I remember Scott saying that if you have to ask how much it weight, chance are it'll be too heavy for you, so I decided to weight mine, fully build with Tubus steel rack (600g), clusterfork, open pro wheelset (campag road + condor fixed hubs), cantis brakeset with drop bar and brake hood levers, white industries crankset and time atac pedals.

The whole thing weight 10.5kg, lighter than a Surly Steamroller Complete which weight at 12.7kg, and a gant heavier than a Charge Plug at 10.2kg.

Not light but neither heavy, better than I though, mind you I'm replacing the stock 1100g fork for a 480g carbon one soon, so removing the rack and adding a carbon fork would put it down to 9.5kg.

  • Still looks shit though.

  • That I ain't denyin' Andy, it does look shit.

Will be installing the Easton EC90X fork on the Gangsta, it's just about the right height too, but with a bit more rake.

  • You Make Me Sick.

  • Words fail me.

  • fail

    .

  • Please can you do a photoshop for us.

Also, I realise there are some pros to carbon forks, but there are also a lot of reports of excessive brake judder when pairing them with canti's. There are lots of ppl recomending mini-V's over canti's if you are using them.

Plus the CX Easton's don't seem to have a good rep. From a bit of recent research I'd be looking look at the new Kinisis one. Especially as it has an optional brake hanger running from where a normal brake hole would be.

  • you're quite right, brake judder do occur in carbon fork, I never experienced anything like that with the Clusterfork though, which to be fair was pretty stiff (after all it was designed for strength + weight in mind).

The Easton were just the right height so the head angle won't be crazy steep, but with a longer rake I'm longed to get.

    Scott shown me Austin Horse's new BMW with the carbon fork, though it look pretty good;

  • Yep, that does look nice on the bike.

I'd have a search on wieghtweenies. The guys on there seem to have been using carbon cx forks for longer than most. I'm not sure if it was there or somewhere else, but there was a team mech (Dutch?) who had plenty of real life experience and was giving tipsnon forks and brakes (get mini-V's was the jist of it).

Search and you shall find. Just thought I'd mention it as the Eastons arent cheap.

Also, I've got to say I think mini-Vs would be better on that anyway. It would definitely solve the cable rooting and i still haven't read reports from ppl who use them complaining of mud clearance issues.

  • Scott shown me Austin Horse's new BMW with the carbon fork, though it look pretty good;

    That one isn't Austins though^
That was another guys just to give you an idea how it looks.
Austin's looks pretty much the same though.

  • Yeah that's not Austins, don't think he has that Easton fork on it either, at least, it didn't look like it at CMWC'11

  • The Eastons forks are great WW forks, albeit a tad flexi. This coupled with a gangster frame just seems plain wrong. That Alpha-Q fork pictured is like a 100g heavier. Devistating weight penalty for a WW, but feck all when partnered with a gangster frame. It has a far better rep for stiffness and reliablility. Makes a load more sense to me.

    IMHO AFAIK etc etc.

Well, I got the Eastons for £70 second hand, originally intended to get a Wound-Up cross fork.

He has a few bikes on the go.
