House up the road has lost part of its roof. “At least it’s not raining”. Cue hailstorm

i've had to put a big plastic storage box under the hole in our roof and hope it catches the rain. roofing guy isn't coming until tuesday... because of course he's not
currently house is freezing because theres fuck all insulation in the loft and the cold air is just sinking down through the entire house. i'm a foot away from a radiator running at 23c and i'm freezing.

A large piece of tarp and no nails might help temporarily .

the "loft" is more like a crawlspace above a loft conversion and the hole in the tiles is about 6 foot from the hatch and I doubt anything up there is capable of holding my weight. I pushed the box into place with a telescoping mop handle. it will probably remain there after we move if it fills with any amount of water as I have no idea how to retrieve it at that point.

It'll be fun when the full box of water comes through the ceiling in a couple weeks time
Pray for roofer

Commiserations to all who have suffered damage.
Three dead in the UK, including one in Haringey, and one dead in Ireland.

Now predicted we will have power back by midnight tonight. Not good for my immediate neighbour who is paralysed from the chest down who needs an air bed to avoid sores etc.
When I called the power company for the third time to request a generator to power medical equipment and again had to point out that sending my neighbour with compromised breathing to hospital might kill him I was told they apologise for the inconvenience. Trying not to scream swear words down the phone I did my best to calmly explain an inconvenience is the deep freezer of food that’s going to be wasted.

Hi any news on your neighbour ?

Apparently that guy is a cyclist as I got sent that same pic on WhatsApp from a mutual cycling friend.
Here's the interior pic to accompany it

Considering they normally only make mimor tweaks to the yoke the way he is wrenching that around with his left hand is terrifying.
Turns out this was the wrong week for my niece and her bf to go to a caravan in Camber sands (a notoriously flat and windy location on any given day of the week).
Fortunately they were evacuated yesterday morning but she got a pic of the nearest units later that day.

Birmingham and Glasgow.

And now, we see if the shoddy fence repairs I attempted yesterday will stand more 50+mph gusts for 2 days, plus the biblical rain coming imminently.

Thanks for asking. A cold miserable night. This morning I went to a friends to get a generator for my neighbour. As I got home with the generator the power company called to say problem would be resolved in 2-3 hours.
Went over the road Set the generator up, got home and it was time to walk the dogs and investigate storm damage. As I looked at the house suddenly all the lights came on. As I got back from the walk my wife pulled up on her return from Scotland and because the coffee machine is remote controlled it was ready for action.
So in the space of an hour everything was resolved, neighbours sorted and I think both our households are considering some kind of back up power source.

Phew! Glad your neighbour's ok, and your good lady made it home safely.

What madness is this?
-

We have important things like lights and coffee machine controlled by smart switches so a lot of our home is electronically automated.
Given somebody in our house loves lots of small mood lights it makes controlling lights and having scenes and automations really easy.

I haven't noticed any water leaking in yet, but I'm also thinking there must be a decent sized hole in the roof somewhere because our flat also suddenly got freezing cold last night and the heating didn't help much. I mean it was actually way colder than I realised (I went to pick up my wife from the station and had to run back to put on an extra fleece because the wind was really cutting through me), but the temperature inside seemed to drop after some particularly horrible noises above me while I was trying to work.

while out walking dog could see from next street over what looked like more missing tiles, popped head into other part of the loft over back part of the house and found 3 more holes where daylight is visible. (also the landlord has left a shit ton of useless old crap up there).
been raining all day and pretty sure i can see a faint line of moisture forming at join of plasterboard sheets in ceiling in loft. so pretty sure it will be fucked by tuesday afternoon when they come to have a look if rain keeps up.

I’d need to ask, tbh. Probably the new one. Would have been about 2003/4?
