  • Hmmmm might give the standard sprinter a shot then. Cheers.

  • Are Sprinters more robust than Competitions? I notice sprinters have nylon puncture protection, whereas competition use vectran

  • I'd got for max protection if there's glass on the roads...though I fear even Vectran can't stop 100s of small pieces of glass + rain :(

I've two big cuts on Gatorskin sprinters that didn't go through, I'd say Vectran is to thank for that. I may be wrong however.

  • Yeah, it implies that the quicker more "race" tire, the competition is also more robust than the sprinter. Although nearly double the price too.

I've been running vectran tires on most on 3 of my bikes now for over 2 years and not had a single puncture. Plenty of cuts but no punctures. I'm sold for life on the stuff.

  • Hmmm choices choices...

Sprinter Gatorskin don't use Vectran. What they get over the Sprinter is called DuraSkin--- used also on the Competition ProTection tubulars. Its a sidewall protector. Its use is against little stones on the road that can damage them... The alternative is to use latex milk to keep the sidewalls intact..

And, as I've mentioned, the Competition ProTection which is a wide Comp, sometimes with a heavier inner-tube and with DuraSkin sidewall protection.. Its what a lot of the Conti sponsored teams use in the Spring..

  • Hm mine clearly say "Vectran Breaker" on the tires.

Anyhoo, nothing is fully bomb proof as I found out, but at least the p_nctr isn't big and tire fixeable instead of a massive destruction gash.

  • Woohoo bagged the GP4000S on e-bay. Those are NOT fixable, so if worst come to worst it's sealant time. But a bargainous £20 for a new tire.

Off to get some shoe sole glue...

  • Nice! Any more of them by any chance? I really like mine and wouldn't mind some spares

  • One off sell unfortunately... I ebayed Continental Sprinter as my tire rule is fix once, them dump (in my experience once the p_nctr layer goes you keep getting them) and got lucky here.

I've seen lightly used tubbies etc...I guess a Continental Tubular saved search may be your friend here :)

  • Once I'd sealant'ed my tubs I noticed that they'd every now and again lose a bit of pressure all at once- I assumed they'd received another bit of glass and then sealed up again.

  • Hm mine clearly say "Vectran Breaker" on the tires.

On Sprinter Gatorskin..?. Let me go check... Have what I think is the newest model in the box...... and... it says DuraSkin+K.

  • I doublechecked and per Wiggle:

3 plies / total 180 tpi + SafetySystem Breaker (Nylon-Kevlar) + Duraskin So Kevlar instead of Vectran.

    The +K on the tyre.

why don't I just buy emulsion I don't even know how to sow

  • Taking my new tubs out for a little test tonight.

After a few false starts they look good.

Struggled with the front. Screwed up the valve exentender installation, screwed up brushing glue onto the tub (missed bits), and then spent too long fighting to get it striaght. Sorted now.

The rear was pretty painless. So the learning curve is pretty steep I reckon. I found working confidently, and quickly, gave the best result at every stage.

  • Hey good you like them

So tub repair underway. Le Manfriend has to cut glue threads. Seems I've done a proper job :p

    Then sowing laterin.

So clean rim: 3 layers on continental Alu glue on both tire and rim.
How many layers should I apply on rim and tire when re gluing?
Do I need to acetone clean rim or is sanding away thick glue all is needed?

Sealant next time No fun having to off road :(

  • I offically in love with my tubulars.

I overhauled the bike last night. So it was always going to feel 'nicer'. But the feel of the veloflex tubulars was better than anything else I've ridden. Could actually feel the improvement over Veloflex master/record combo I'm currently commuting on on the fixed.

Time to put tubulars of all the things!

  • Do I need to acetone clean rim or is sanding away thick glue all is needed?

Again... Acetone is the WRONG solvent. Please see one of my previous messages on this topic...

  • Ok ok..

What about do I need to clean at all? As rim was fully clean. Do I need to strip or will rubbing thick glue do?

How many layers do I applt? 3 instead of 2 on rim, 1 instead of 2 on tire?

  • If you use Acetone, you will surely die.

    Like me.

  • If you use Acetone, you will surely die.
of boredom... its the wrong solvent for the job...

  • Internet from the grave

Pulking off the basetape involved cutting glue with a knife and mini pliers. And a curious boyfriend. Sometimes work gets done without having to ask.

    Sowing course on the way.

Now if I only knew if a bit of old glue on rims is ok... :p

  • Now if I only knew if a bit of old glue on rims is ok... :p

Of course it is!!!!! Old flaky glue is not ok but with a wire acid brush it would all just turn to powder and fall off... The old glue.. If it goes not "fall off" when rubbed with said brush its "foundation" and not "old glue" :-)
