Tubs

  • 2 thin coats on rim and one on tub should be more than enough?

I usually three coat on rims, two on tubs (left to dry after each apply), after drying, install and inflated to max pressure and leave for 24 hours for customer bicycles (best to be safe than sorry).

  • Its not a fresh rim though, its caked in glue already so I would think 3 would be overdoing it a bit surely?

  • Ah yeah the caked rims.

  • Wait, that doesn't sound right.

  • Mmmmm cake

  • Any tips for a tub novice? I said to myself that I'd never bother with tubs, but an awesome deal came up in a track disc, so here I am.

I train and TT on GP4000S II clincher - is there an equivalent tubular all rounder?

  • If it's for racing I'd take a look at what tub has a good balance of rolling resistance and puncture resistance and stick one on with Mastik'One.

Conti do a range of tubs, I've a lot of experience of the Sprinter Gator, but that's very much a training rather than a racing tub.

  • Nothing like the Gator clincher btw, the Sprinter Gator is a very good tyre.

  • Something like a Schwalbe one is going to be Close to a 4000s I reckon.

Vittoria Corsa are the go to tub for racing (get iso-grip Version, not the old ones). They are the tubs most likely to be found at a good price. Veloflex are also awesome. But you tend to pay more for what really isnt a better tyre. I'd be looking at something like that. Contis have stiff sidewalls which have a negative effect on ride. Fine if you're heavy and hard on sidewalls I Guess.

For something more robust to pros like conti competitions its seems. But getting them in a decent casing size, and a decent price is a pain. I have vittoria pave on my training Wheels. As someone that likes to run the best riding tyres (FMB, Veloflex, Challenge etc.). I cant say I was exactly excited about trying my New 'robust' tyres. But Paves really do ride great, the iso-grip compound grips New wet tarmac well, and they come in bloody light for such a well protected tyre.

Also for TT use. There is another benefit of traditional, glued on tread, Construction of claasic tubs. The edge of the tread acts as a 'air trip', and makes them more aero. At least thats what the internet says.

  • There is (or certainly was) a gp4000 tub, I had them on my Heds and they felt very nice, and lasted a long time, but I believe they are u repairable, so one use only type things....

  • To be honest not many People would bother repairing a tub these days.

The moulded tub without a stiching layer on the inside, is a lot easier to Mount. Its the stitching that doesnt want to stretch. I read that they dont ride as well though. But I'm not sure I believe that.

Most conti tubs come With butyl inners too. Which is a bit meh.

Buy some pressurized sealant though. Its awesome stuff for tub users.

  • In other News I have a FMB CX competition, silk Version, at home. With a massive lump. What i'd have called an 'eggy' in my BMX days. Plus a FMB paris-roubiax, Cotton Version, With a massive side wall blow out, and tread glue failiure.

I personally blame user error. I rode thesae tyre to Death through a Norwegian spring (snow, salt, rain, and grit). Which is well outside their Comfort zone. But I'm going to send pics to FMB With a polite E-mail I think.

  • Did you seal the sidewalls before using them?

  • Are you going to ride it too TTs, or just for racing? I'd go Vittoria Corsa if the former, Vittoria Crono/Veloflex Record if the latter.

  • The FMBs came presealed. It was the thing that tiped the Balance over the slightly cheaper Dugast.

But it appears the glue failed under the tread leading to a puncture on the PR, and the carcass has somehow failed on the silk tyre.

Both due to salt and water I reckon. They were pretty worn when they failed so I'm not massively disapointed. But cant see myself buying them again.

  • Ah, OK.

I guess silk sidewalls don't last long no matter how carefully you look after them.

The glue failure will be down to water ingress to the carcass, I would imagine.

  • I've sent a polite E-mail because I'm curious.

My feeling is that the washroom, my road bike is now stored in, hasnt allowed them to dry fully, or quick enough. I've taken to leaving the doors open. I think helps (my washing dries quicker at least).

  • Get a dehumidifier - handy things

  • Probably a good idea. Things will get a lot less airy in the flat when Winter kicks in.

  • Leave 24 hrs and vulva it's ready to roll.

I expect you meant voilà, unless your tub glueing procedure is more exciting than mine.

  • Any tips for a tub novice?

    Thanks for the recommendations all

  • What tub glue/mastik/cement is red?

  • Clement used to do a red tubular glue, I think. Must be pretty old though if it's that.

  • Read earlier you got some Schwalbe one tubs? Are you still using them? Any good? Impressed with their clinchers, and they are about £44 on Wiggle at the moment

  • I've got a pair, they are stretching at the moment - I've been running the Ultremo HT tubs which the One's are due to replace, and really liked them.

However - the One's seem to (I can't find a reference anywhere) have a butyl tube, which is a disappointment as the Ultremo had latex.

If I'd know that they were Butyl I'd have bought Corsa CX's instead.
