  • I bought a couple of the newest vittoria paves. A 25 and a 27. Very nicely made, and pretty light. 291g and 297g. Just over 700g on the wide kinlin alu rims. Which is awesome as they will be mountain wheels. Which means climbing, rough roads, and dodgy weather. So I want lightness, comfort, grip, and great braking. Bit of a big ask. Might work out OK.

  • You're gonna enjoy them even further with latex.

  • Liquid latex?

I prefer to ride With them as is. But carry pressurised latex. The stuff I carry is ammoinia free which is a bit kinda on the latex inner.

My rear FMB has 1/3 can in it and holds air better than it did when New. I rode a Veloflex carbon hand-me-Down which had been repaired With the same stuff then replaced by the previous owner. It had sat around filled With the stuff for nearly a year before I mounted it, and rode the last 1000km out of it.

  • For the record I bought the green Paves. Black was a notable chunck of cash more.

They are noticably stiffer than a corsa. But still have soft side walls and only weigh a few grams more. Even at 25/27mm sizes.

  • Ive been riding these for about a year (but not through winter) and really can't make my mind up about them. Sometimes they feel like you're riding though tar, sometimes they just feel slow. They are the total opposite to a go-to tyre.

Ive got them as tubs and clinchers and the clinchers don't seem to be the same.

  • Strange. I was going to go with conti-comps but the butyl inner and stiff sidewalls put me off. These are meant to be resiliant mountain tyres. But I dont want to spend valuble time in the mountians riding naff feeling tyres. So these 'on paper' seemed a nicer option.

Maybe I'll get the conti's for the aero wheels and see how they feel.

They don't feel that "naff". I quite like them. I've got loads of tubulars but the Comps are my "go to" long distance tyre. They are reasonably round, have very good grip, corner well and are robust. There are LTDs out there with latex inner-tubes but I really don't mind the butyl. If you don't need the protection layer and want something a bit lighter you can also run the Tempos--- a lot of people in the pro-tour circuit use them in mountains.

  • I've ordered some Challenge Criterium for my aero wheelset. Basically out of curiosity.

I may go with comps for my next set of tubs for the mountain wheelset. But thats a while off hopefully. ALthough I'm not sure I need heaps of protection. Just good wet grip. The Mountains I ride arent exactly bathed in sunshine. Maybe the tempos could work.
Possibly With Dugast as the NeXT set for the aero Wheels.

My FMBs have done around 2000km. They really are a Nice riding tyre, without being sketchy in the wet. Takes a fair bit of force for them to Wash out. Even on a wet descent. Which I've gotten used to now.

I think I've failed to collect any Challenge branded tyres (yet) :-)

One may not need the protection but having robust tyres does not hurt. They are popular in peleton for good reason.

Contis always had good grip but the "Black Chili" compound is really nice..

Don't know about Dugast anymore.. Used to be the best but the new brand is quite different from the old. For old school road tyres at the price point I'd kept to FMBs...

2000 km is not bad for a set of light tyres. Beyond 2-3k almost any tyre has pretty much elected itself for retirement in glory.

  • Sorted. Thanks @Dammit

  • Cheers for the feedback.

The Comps do look good. I'll keep an eye out for any offers.

I read the exact same regarding Dugast. Ultimately I'll probably og back to Veloflex. They seem to work brilliantly for me. I'm just a sucker for trying New stuff.

The FMBs look in great shape. The rear profile has flattened some, yet still rides perfectly. The front is a silk competition CX, which has seen far more rain than it should have (I wouldnt have chosen silk for my riding. But a it was delivered by mistake, and I couldnt say no). That looks in good shape too. So the expensive nature of FMBs, is pretty much just the initial outlay. They have proved to last as well as any other race tub I've used.

  • Tried Condor? Or Sigma?

  • I need some new tubs for my 404s. Option 1 is to replace the Vittoria Corsa CXII death tyres with CX IIIs with the Isogrip compound, Option 2 is Veloflex Carbons, Option 3 is the new Continental GP4000S ii tubulars. I've been impressed by the GP4000S ii clinchers, so I'm tempted by the tubular equivalent. All opinions welcome.

  • I'm in the same boat, would pull the trigger at once on some Veloflex Carbons if I could find/if they come in a 25, but they only seem to be 22/23.

  • Hmm, Veloflex Arenberg seem to fit the bill.

  • Schwalbe One in 24c, pair of, ordered.

  • Been riding a schwalbe 1 in 24.

Doesn't Have the magic carpet ride of veloflex or fmb. Not far off though. But it does have great grip, solid feeling sidewalls, and good longevity.

    Now on my challenge criteriums.

    Very soft and fast feeling.

  • I went for Corsa CX IIIs in the end. I loved the CX IIs, apart from their sudden loss of grip in the wet, so hopefully the new compound will improve that.

  • Existing Ultemo HT's (precursor to the One) dealt with this perfectly well, so seemed a logical choice (they also ride very nicely):

  • Iso grip works.

CX corsa's are now a very good fast tub. They are to be had loads cheaper than equivalent fast tubs too.

@Dammit I think you'll prefer the One to the Ultremo. Seems to have the same grip and solidity. But with a softer ride. IMHO.

Brilliant timing, I bought a pair yesterday and was a little uncertain. You've cheered me right up, thanks ;-)

  • I love the Corsa CX, but (unless they've changed it) they've got as much grip on the tarmac in the wet as Hippy has on his self control in a midget dormitory.

  • They've changed it. Used to be Kevlar/SiO2 compound, now it's 'IsoGrip'. Here's hoping it's better. TBH, I never found Corsa CX IIs lacking in grip in the wet. The problem was the way they let go when they ran out of grip - i.e. no warning, just an immediate introduction to Mr. Tarmac.

  • I could spin the rear wheel on a climb passing into the shade of a tree, such is/was the reaction to temperature/dew of their previous tyre.

  • Any experienced tub gluers know if this seems like a reasonable base layer to glue onto? Its pretty thick and stuck on so I dont really want to spend a week getting all the old glue off.. the only thing is there are a few bits where there is very little glue residue left and its not even all the way round really. I wouldnt say the glue was rock hard solid, its hard but still slightly tacky and according to the seller it was well looked after so tempted to just glue over it..

Best recommendations for removing old stubborn glue using very non toxic stuff as the alu rim edge is bonded to carbon kevlar?

Also anyone have a nice stash of old school tubs lying around?
