  • I got a firmware update earlier this week (to support Vector pedals on the Edge 500). Now a bunch of favourite Courses will not write to the unit.

    Thanks Obama.

  • Ta. Sorted. Used this process, paste google link straight into http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert?output and it creates GPX file.

I need to follow my own bloody advice. #idiot

  • I've searched this thread, and widely around the internet and I suspect the answer is no but does anyone use a Nokia Lumia with HERE Maps as a GPS device for cycling?

I suspect no as I don't believe you can import files or even set your own routes on the device itself.

Kind of a shitter as it seems like a decent app otherwise.

  • Does anyone know anything about car GPS units? TomTom etc?

Which is best and do any of them allow you to add GPX routes to them?

  • I'm playing a long with loading GPX files to Garmin car GPS for the Copenhagen-Warsaw trip - will report back in a couple of days. I expect it to be a matter of dropping the GPX files in the right folder on the unit.

  • Which Garmin Car GPS do you have? Are they any good compared to TomTom?

  • I really hope one of these new fangled Android/iOS wrist watches gets a decent mapping & routing app. Tired of Garmin's lacklustre Edge efforts year after year.

  • So my sister is after a GPS she can use for running and cycling.

Is there one of these that will do both and not cost more than £250?

For the cycling part does she want navigation or recording only.

No chance. Battery life will be feeble if it's watch-sized.

    Forerunner?
    Edge mounted to wrist?

Can't you just use and android app on your phone?

    Boom - http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/aldi-launches-multi-sport-gps-watch-first-look-41488

  • Can't you just use and android app on your phone?

    Yeah, we do but:
phone can be busy doing other things
    battery life
    small screen
no good when no mobile signal (which is basically anywhere outside of London it seems, fucking bumpkinville)

  • Get hands free. Or use an old phone.
    Get charger.
    Get bigger phone. Or glasses.
    Get preloaded maps.

  • Old phone doesn't have smartphone capabilities that are in use
Have charger, doesn't help if current draw due to use is more than it can supply
Bigger phone.. or say a TomTom
Preloaded maps don't cover a large enough area

Conclusion: Need a car-specific GPS. But thanks for trying.

  • You're welcome.

How about a road atlas and sextant?

  • Have road atlas as backup. I'm too tired for sexytime, call me tomorrow.

  • You bring the tent then.

  • Okay, okay but don't blame me if you can't stand up straight in it. I told you it was small.

  • For the cycling part does she want navigation or recording only.

    Ideally navigation

    Forerunner?
    Edge mounted to wrist?

I did wonder that. It seems you can buy one which does a job well but won't do both cycling and running.

  • The Mio Cyclo 505 is on sale at Box at the moment for a cheaper than other places price of £250.

  • Any suggestions for OSM walking/hiking maps for Garmin. Googling throws up various random things but no real detail what all the various maps have. Looking at the Lake District for the moment. Cheers

I would think that the bog standard map from the source would be best.
