I'm assuming they rolled back the big change but I also presume that if they had to break streetview to keep Google happy, they will have to reintroduce that feature soon.

Just checked, yellow golem-man still isn't available on non-Google maps for me (and RWGPS cycle map is empty)

Some UTFS on this thread didn't seem to turn up an answer so...
Recommendations for Garmin repairs places? My old 800 still works fine but the silicone around the power button has borked leaving the button embedded in the case.
Would rather avoid the aliexpress / DIY route if possible.

I had that with my 1000 and after looking at all the 3D printed solutions and aftermarket shit I just took their trade-in offer to get a discounted 1030 Plus. Soz.
I'll sell you my 800 for £millions if you want. It only gets used riding to the shops nowadays anyway :)

Only you would KOM your

Looks like RWGPS have reintroduced the change that broke Squadrats the other week.
-

There's a 3D printed one kicking around which I used on my 1000. Bit of superglue, some silicone sealant and it was fine for the few months I had it before I gave it to my old man and replaced it. He doesn't use it much so not sure how it'd have gone with regular use.

Anyone got any experience in the 1040 solar? Just wondering how much it adds in terms of the solar in real use.
-
• #3135
I'm 1040 curious at the moment too.
Missus broke the USB cover off her 1030 so you know what that means? "Please Garmin take £500+ of mine so I can have an upgrade and she gets my 1030 Plus because you know I only need the slimmest of reasons to satisfy my compulsion to upgrade"
-

I'm 840 curious. But can't justify £400 as the only thing I want is to have the ability to scroll the screen easily - otherwise 530 does exactly what I want.
The 1040 is only £20 more (both at Tredz).I wouldn't pay a premium for the solar. On the vast majority of my rides I use less than half the battery. Then for multi-day ultras I would need to take additional power sources even with the solar. The number of rides where the solar would make a difference to what I did / needed would be very close to zero.
The number of mAh's it generates is tiny compared to taking an extra (small) battery, and I plan to never go so close to the wire on power that I have to rely on a minature solar panel.

I have the solar, got it mainly because 64gb looks more useful/future-proof than 32gb which the non-solar has. Upgraded when it first came out from 1030plus because I suffer upgraditivitis. In fact I don't even have the free time to ride that much any more.
There are still a few bugs (sensors not connecting until reboot kind, which could be fixed by now) so don't expect a rock solid unit like the 1030 plus. But the new features look nice (link goes to DCR review)

Probably why I should ignore the solar. I was set to get the 840 but that it's the same size as the 540 seems perverse for some reason and I can't let it go :)
-
• #3139
For the extra money, would you want it to be bigger, or smaller?
-
• #3140
I got the 810 primarily because it was a little bigger than the 510 I was replacing (and colour, I think). The 1000 I got later was great and it was easier to see stuff on the screen at a glance but the power button did what Edge 1000 buttons do and in the end I moved to the 830 as i couldn't afford the 1030 at the time.
So the touchscreen is worth it probably, but the extra size always felt like another good reason for the 800-series devices. That I can get a 1040 for the same price as the 840-solar makes me think the 1040 will be the one.

What worries me most is the UI changes. The older I get, the more annoyed I get when they bury my oft-used thing an extra menu deep.
Also, is that stupid fucking Virtual Partner still wasting CPU cycles on the 1040?

Good point and I'm afraid you can guess the answer to that.
-
• #3143
I swear to god it's not actually a virtual partner, it's like the save feature they had to animate on-screen because otherwise it'd time out or some fucking obscure reason. They can't actually think that stupid prick is useful?

Anyone got a cheap Garmin for sale?

Is there a way to view old activities in Garmin Express?
I want to see rides from about 10 years ago, which are buried under thousands of more recent ones. The only way I see to do it is to scroll back manually, which would take ages. I don't know the name of the ride file so can't do a search - I can only find it by date.

Use the calendar on the left menu bar?
-
• #3147
Garmin Connect website? I haven't found a better way of using Calendar, setting to year and clicking back. It's still feckin' slow but they don't use nice URLs so you can't do like Strava and type in the year and month you want.

Use the calendar on the left menu bar?
I hadn't spotted that, so thanks. But I tried it and it doesn't work. It is easier to scroll back by 10 years. I get weekly totals on the right hand side, but can't see any individual activities on the calendar. To test I went back to this month and it was the same - the calendar is just blank for every day and I can't see the actual rides.
Am I missing something?
-
• #3149

Yes, annoying. I complained to RWGPS about that when they stopped using them in their new 'Explore' thingy, and they listened and reinstated.

Your ride data? Mine days are only blank if there's no ride on that day.
From here, I would click on a day and it would take me to that month, then I can see specific rides on each day and I click and it loads a kind of pop up and then I open in new tab, so it doesn't lose my position in the calendar.
