  • Freeloader are another brand - just for impartiality and ting.

  • Ah ok. So I'd have to charge it from the mains when I can? Don't they do one that you can charge USB but off a normal battery?

  • I have also tried the powermonkey but found that they took a long time to charge off the solar panel.

I ended up getting something from Asda for £10 which uses AA batteries and has a selection of connection tips incl. mini usb. It can use standard AA's or rechargeable ones. For multi day trips without access to mains power this seemed the best option

  • For info the Etrex uses standard AA batteries.

  • Quick question: am I right in thinking that a bike-mounted GPS won't be anywhere near as accurate on speed/distance as a normal bike computer? And, if so, will getting one with a cadence/speed sensor and using the speed sensor (I think they work like a bike computer: magnet on spoke, receiver on seat stay) make it as accurate as a normal bike computer? I'm still really interested in getting a Garmin, but all the info on the net seems to be wishy-washy. Someone needs to iPod-ify the bike GPS market and make a really simple one...

  • Get a GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor, and use that with your Garmin.

  • So this would give me accurate speed/distance?

Also, with the 500, you just get a little black line to follow as a route, don't you? Is it feasible that I could plot a long ride on Bikely, then upload it to that and follow it? Or is it not clear enough to rely on?

  • Yes, and don't know.

  • :)

    Ta, Dammit

  • Has anyone used Topofusion to merge different data sets?

For example wired power meter output with a .tcx from a Garmin?

  • Small, cheap, simple GPS tracker that will log time and position, then 'fess up when back from the ride?

Not sure what you mean by cheap. The Garmin edge 200?

I fitted by Bryton rider 35 tonight. Its ANT+, so will work with all the Garmin stuff. It has the funtionality level of the Edge 500. I can confirm that it works flawlessly with the GSC-10 cadence/speed sensor.

I have two options on my Bryton. Little black line, or arrows with distance to turn. The second seems clearer, and uses less space.

Neither are really geared towards navigation though. They are designed primarily to be training aids. With the navigation chucked on, as a brucey bonus.

  • I would like to convert the output of a cycle computer from .srm to .gpx in order to upload it to Strava.

I would also like to be able to convert the .srm to a .csv in order to merge it with an existing .gpx using Topofusion.

So, what I need is a file converter- anyone used one that they can recommend?

  • Has Garmin got anything that lasts longer than 24 hours yet?

  • Attempting to attach a file to this post- if successful, could someone please confirm that it's just headings and no data?

You can open it with excel.

  • Right, GPX files are not on the list of approved files so you cannot attach them to posts.

    Fucksticks.

  • I bet you say that to all the boys.

  • Email it me & I'll have a look.

I promise not to remember where you live.

    Thanks and done

  • Your file

  • It's the only one that I could find that would upload an .srm, which it did very easily.

However, it seems to be unable to then export it as a .GPX, as freezing77 has demonstrated.

    Bugger.

  • Have you tried gps vizualizer? http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input
Not to sure if it can deal with srm files but has a very wide choice of options

    Or perhaps gpsbabel
    http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/gpsbabel/

  • I have emailed you one, I imagine it is just a large table.
