The apart from 30 minutes of non-stop explosions ... the expendibles really impressed me as it explored the values of redemption, kinship, the inner humanity and whether the soul transcends existence (Mickey Rourke monolouge while painting a guitar really went explored this subject).
Stallones performance was gripping from the start to climatic finale, he was a gun for hire that needed to "save" his soul by risking his life for a woman that he barely knew, she represented the redemption that stallone was looking for.
They also explored the themes of art, how it was influenced by war. They even explored the subject cultural warrior makeup aka war paint and how it represented the wearer.
There was also biblical slant, as Terry Crews reminded us about the importance of Christmas.
All in all it delivered on many levels.

very good review there Lucas.
If I may be bold enough to add, the theme of Americas place in world politics and history was also dealt with deftly. True to Stallones life long mission to liberate the underdog, the island and its inhabitants in this film are portrayed as the innocents, harking back to a time before the crass materialism of Americana arrives, the purity and innocence of the islander existence can be seen as a metaphor for what the mercenaries have lost. I would be surprised if there arent multiple Oscars earnt from the acting performances too. -

Rourke Cried ... so he is definetely going to get an Oscar.

Couture might not get an oscar though... he did kick ass most impressivly (As you'd expect) Loved the film it didn't dissapoint at all.
A friend is so excited about this film, he was talking about hiring out the whole place and watching it, lifting weights, wanking and crying at the same time... Things are conspiring against him seeing it, he's starting to get a little mad heh heh

The Couture fight at the end was immense! I missed the Mickey Rourke dialogue though which I'm quite pissed off about.
The only thing it needed were a few more one liners.

Tory Cunts axe Uk film Council
lets see if they remove the tax breaks that keep the uk film industry afloat by incentivising US and other film makers to do their pre-pro, shoots and post here.
i'll be queuing for a job in mcdonalds if they fuck it. -

The Film Council was set up by the Labour government...
No wonder the Tory axed it without much consideration. -

Anyone seen Inland Empire? I fancy checking it out even though I know it'll be infuriating, exhausting and pretentious. Plus I might just OD on Lynch.

• #920
I think I seen that film before, was it about a bloke on those 50cc pizza delivery scooter in the north of england?
-
• #921
Try it out, but don't punish yourself if your not feeling it. I found it too self indulgent and didn't see it all.
-
• #922
inland empire- about an hour too long indulgence with digital film wise, but still lynch manages the whole transition between 'real'/dream storylines (a la Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive) better than any other time he's done it. that doesn't make it a better film, but just still found that particular aspect of his films stronger at least. anyone seen any of the interview projects he's doing at the moment?

Fuck me just heard Julliette Binoche being interviewed by Mark Lawson,
Interestingly she used the word freedom in connection with her work about four times
God she is a legendary Goddess of an actress.
getting stoked about the autumn season coming on-- -

That Gavras film looks really good. The clip at 1:16 looks like a reference to his video for M.I.A., 'Born Free'.
I need a kevlar vest and a black beret.
