  • I saw it when it came out as well and I really liked it. I didn't feel that was because it was worthy, although I do think the exoticism played a part. Surely that is a huge part of why cinema is enjoyable though? The whole way it is filmed is completely immersive, and being immersed in a way of life which is completely different from your own can be a powerful experience. It was a good plot anyway, and brought up a lot of discussion and questions afterwards, which I think is what you want from art.

That said, I also went to see Once Upon A Time in Anatolia with my girlfriend and three friends. My girlfriend and I loved it, the others all fell asleep and thought it was horrific and long. Perhaps I am one of those pompous 'it's-foreign-so-it's-better' types.

  • Runner Runner, watchable movie. Pretty surprised with Justin Timberlake and his acting, every movie I've seen of him has been pretty good.

  • I am quite sad that I didn't enjoy Enough Said much. Kind of awkward and unpleasant.

  • anyone seen 47 ronin yet?

  • Enjoyed all of the following, all pretty 'serious' in tone although Reality verges on the absurd at times

    Prisoners - crime thriller
War Witch - tragic tale following child soldier in Democratic Republic of Congo
Reality - follows a wannabe contestant in Italian Big Brother

  • Rush

    What he said

Been looking forward to this film.
The liverpool team of the 1980s was legendary.

But im slightly confused as its showing as dual language
What percentage of the film is spoken in German?
    I hate films with subtitles.

  • Only a few minutes, nothing to worry about.

  • House of good and evil. Load of unmitigated shit. Avoid completely.

  • Vendetta. Go on my son, AV IT!

    Dont mess with Danny Dyer.

  • Watched the 'The Way, Way Back' last night - a very enjoyable film, highly recommended.

  • ^ Great film...

Watched 12 Years a Slave yesterday, I thought it was amazing... Bleak but powerful...

Also watched Sunday in Hell, Overcoming and Hell on Wheels over the weekend... May have to watch La Course en TĂȘte later...

  • "The Hunt" (Jagten) about a kindergarten teacher wrongly accused of pedophilia. Interesting topic (how suspicions form, how people react) and well acted.

  • Drive just started on BBC 2...

Just sat through the rest of this. Felt the first half was good, if something of an obvious set up.

Then boom, everything happens and it just looks cheap?

    [spoiler ?]
So much excessive blood and I think the violence would have had far more emotive impact if it wasn't so explicit?

  • Really enjoyed Drive, the good thing about your comment Branwen is that I was preparing for the worse, only to still enjoy it.

  • I saw La Grande Belleza (The Great Beauty) last week. It was strange, pretentious, atmospheric, and quite long, but one of the most beautiful and captivating films I've ever seen. Still not really sure what happened in some of it, and I'm not sure I understand it. But I'd watch it again tonight if I could. Good soundtrack too.

Saw this last night, agree with the above. It perfectly captured that uneasy sense of unfulfillment that can sometimes accompany life, it had a real dry darkness below the surface I thought and the constant shots of an almost deserted Rome reflected that nicely.

  • Next up is The Act of Killing.

  • Really enjoyed Drive, the good thing about your comment Branwen is that I was preparing for the worse, only to still enjoy it.

Watch Only God Forgives Ed, that really divided critics, I loved it but I have A Thing for Kristin Scott Thomas.

  • Who doesn't? good shout, I actually got that DVD, which is a mistake given that you can watch it in Netflix in HD.

  • Drive, OGF - nicely cut, emperor's new clothes bum gravy.

  • Off to see the preview of Wes Anderson's new film Grand Budapest Hotel on the 25th of Feb at the NFT, tickets went on sale 15 mins ago..

Do you need to phone up? Couldn't find a "buy" button on the website.

  • The Act of Killing is well worth seeing. remarkable weird, borderline surreal and also a wonderful method of capturing primary historical information.

Saw All is Lost last night - distinctly Meh. but a very challenging film to make well. One actor and no more than ten lines of dialogue.

looks like the first block is sold out, next lot on sale, jan 14th at 10.30 or 11.30 (have closed tab now)

  • I found American Hustle really disappointing. It was like a Goodfellas spin-off from the makers of Happy Days..

This. So much disappoint. It was just a mess which didn't seem to get started. A melange of so many other films which was compounded by the De Niro cameo which just made it feel like he stepped out of Goodfella's and into it.

I got so fed up of seeing Amy Adams tits waft about under 70's dresses in practically every scene she was in (sic)

Seemed like David Russel had just discovered the dolly as well. So many dolly in, dolly out shots for no reason.
