  • As a younger man, yes.

I'd have left her looking like a painters' radio.
    That's fookin' disgusting.

    Where's the mental bleach?

  • Mesrine.

  • That's fookin' disgusting.

    Where's the mental bleach?

And wrong I think I believe the correct term is a plasterer's radio.

  • Ah, this reminds me actually. Does anybody have a copy of 'Belleville Rendez-vous?' I want to screen it but can't find one anywhere...

  • Mesrine.

    +1

Also, for the blackest of black French comedies, La Grande Bouffe/The Big Eat (old though not as arty farty as the New Wave stuff).
A group of friends with a suicide pact lock themselves in a mansion with a well stocked larder to feast until they die.

and Man Bites Dog (90s?) a documentary film crew follow around a professional serial killer while he 'works'. It really shouldn't be funny but Benoît Poelvoorde is brilliant.

  • Anyone got any good French language films to recommend? I really struggle with my hearing when conversing in French and films are a good way for me to practice. I'm not talking Godard or Jeunet but definitely something contemporary?

Irreversible is pretty amazing. I think it starred Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassell? Quite brilliant with astonishing acting although it is rather harrowing, not sure i could watch it again. Amelie it aint.

  • La Haine.

  • Literally just about to say I really want to see La Haine it looks so good

  • Tell No One (Ne le dis à personne).

  • Really didn't like tell no one. Thought it was silly

  • Can't win 'em all.

I do. It's a free dvd from a newspaper that my friend lent me approx 2 years ago and I'm sure he wouldn't mind me lending it to you.

As for a French film, in case nobody has mentioned it, Subway? And that other one...Nikita?

  • In all honesty I think MotherGirl should buy a Simpsons season and watch it in French. That's what we would do in my French class back in the day. It helped plus French Simpsons are hilarious

  • Eddie Izzard did 'Circle' in French, that would be good too.

    ^This.

  • I really like The Beat That My Heart Skipped, thought it was class.

Also Hidden (Caché) and Code Unknown are two films Michael Haneke did in French. The former is amazing, the latter pretty good too.

Belleville Rendezvous seems to be called The Triplets of Belleville in English as well, which is why I couldn't find it at my uni library for ages

  • Fuck Hidden is on my list as well looks amazing. Forgot how good French cinema was

  • *is

So, a feel good flick then?

  • Original Stallone or new Statham?

  • Finally watched The Artist last night. Good, but I think all the hype has dulled it a little for me. I did enjoy that it was filmed in 4:3 though.

Really looking for to the new Aardman film Pirates. Can't wait.

  • Re-watched Quadrophenia the other night, still awesome.

I must admit I am too

  • Me too. Keeping Hugh Grant employed is a worry though.
