White Noise - think a film length episode of the Brady Bunch written by David Lynch, it’s really good and worth seeing on the big screen before it hits Netflix.

I liked it at first, but the last half our I got a sense of 'trying too hard' from it. The outro with the new LCD Soundsystem tune made up for it. 3,5 stars.

I was recommended "a bunch of amateurs" by a film loving friend from work the other week when she saw it at a screening but couldn't track it down. It's a documentary about a Bradford amateur film makers club established in 1933 that used to be massive but like most similar clubs have basically all but disappeared. It was on bbc4 last night and I assume iPlayer now and is well worth a watch. Beautiful little slice of British eccentricity, history and odd but lovable northern characters. The old guy really reminded me of my wife's grandad who probably died at around the time it was filmed and a few bits got me in the feels, but an uplifting story overall i think.

Slightly OT but if there are any Studio Ghibli fans on here, I need to shift 2 tickets to My Neighbour Totoro at The Barbican tonight due to illness. Shoot me a DM if interested!

I finally got round to watching Avatar, after only 13 years. Who the fuck is excited for more of these?? I fell asleep for 40 minutes or so part way through and didn't notice.

BITD, in 3d, on the big screen, it was still long and shit.

I believe it's also known as Smurfs in space, total crap either way

Bad back gave me a chance to smash through some new movies over the weekend.
Spiderman no way home - i've enjoyed the new Spiderman movies but i really didn't get into this. Too many competing small part performances that made the acting seem a bit crap and too much Tom Holland being squeaky for my liking.
Venom 2 - better than the first but fell asleep half way
The Krampus - tried a new Christmas horror movie, regretted not watching Gremlins
The Oak Room - kind of meh thriller but i'm a sucker for a blizzard in the night plot. Watched it late on Friday when the snow and frost was still a thing for added atmosphere.
Half Nelson - Rewatch but's it's been a while and still holds up well IMO. Sad that Shareeka Epps career didn't really take off after.

Not yet, liked the look of it, reviews are very marmite, worth a go?

I finally got round to watching Female Trouble off the back of that. Needless to say, I'm absolutely brimming with festive spirit as a result.

Worth a go.
I really liked it but as I say caught me somewhat off guard -

I’ve seen most of them but never that one or High Hopes, we’re working our way through. Watched Tangerine again tonight, it’s very good and brings back memories of the Christmas we spent house sitting in Canoga Park.
-
• #19546
I think High Hopes is one of Mike Leighs best!
-
• #19547
Tangerine is so good, I still haven't got round to watching Red Rocket by the same director. Need to sort that out!

• #19548
Added to the list!

On the subject of Mike Leigh, I watched “life is sweet” the other day, absolutely love it

Rather frustratingly, my wife and I have the first opportunity to go out together since our son was born 18 months ago. Literally first time out without our son. Desperate to go to the cinema on Thursday, literally every cinema is showing the same selection of films. Even the little cinema with one screen has opted to show avatar for some reason.
So we’re off to see “the menu” at 0915. Gutted nowhere is showing The Banshees of inisherin, had assumed it would have a wider release.
Really enjoyed the Guillermo del Toro Pinocchio. Story same, but different, and this actually adds something as opposed to the boring, clumsy live action one. Great music and songs, and the ingenuity of the stop frame production had me captivated from start to finish.
