  • the police are now active in brick lane market and will be for the foreseeable future, if you have had anything stolen this week please make sure you get down brick lane and have a search for the missing bits, the police are now making a concerted effort to rid the world of the bike thiefs
the usual stall holders were there this moring with nice wheels saddle seat posts etc. bikes on the side of the street. we now have much better chances of finding our bits with the police assistance.

  • The bastards strike again. Half an hour ago mine was nabbed from Notting Hill Gate. Rode to Tesco, locked it, still there when I came out. Saw a mate, went to McDonalds with him, 10 minutes later - vanished.

They even took the lock, an Abus Varedo; £45 of crap. Most expensive 2 double cheeseburgers ever. Nothing stops these people - busy area, people everywhere, daylight. No problem to them. They're everywhere. Got a build nearly ready, but I was depending on the sale, and it's public transport until it's finished for me now. Blue SE Draft, stripped of decals, black rear tyre, grey Charge spoon. No OTP jokes. They won't stop me riding though.

    Kill 'em all.

Shit. I was up there almost exactly the same time as you, sorry to hear this. Will keep an eye out.

  • Cheers. The more I think about it, the more I reckon I know who it might have been. There were 3 kids, about 13/14 years old, by the bike racks when I came out of Tesco. They were talking loudly, and I overheard snippets of their talk - 'make more money', 'selling it'...it's just chit-chat, until my bike walks a few minutes later. You can't challenge people for something that's not yet happened, but as I think it over, things are dropping into place. I think they were scoping the bikes out - I just took them for kids locking their bikes up initially. Sadly they chose mine. But life goes on.

  • For fuck's sake, when I was a kid we made our money on paper rounds or doing chores, not committing crimes. Little bastards. Hopefully OB can help you get it back :/

Aaah, the golden age of counterfeiting....

  • Aaah, the golden age of counterfeiting....

  • Announcement - this place fucking rules. I knew it before, and I know it even more now. Two people I've never even met have offered to lend me a bike until my build is ready. That is properly touching, and what really defines this place I think. Full on gratitude.

  • The only bike I ever had nicked (so far) was locked with an Abus Varedo. I thought: I don't need the top Abus, the next one down will surely be enough to persuade people to try a different bike instead...

Was locked outside the LSE about 2 years ago for a couple of hours. I also made the mistake of being lazy and just locking the top tube to the Sheffield (have Pitlocks). Big mistake. Think they snapped it with a lever (I found the remains of the lock there, sheared in two places).

Moral: Don't use an Abus Varedo as a primarly lock I'm afraid.
    Oh, and fill the shackle!

  • If you're going to spend £50 on a lock, there's no excuse for not getting this

  • Anyone lost a dark blue TJ Quick?

Saw a bloke in London Fields Cycles this morning with a dark blue TJ Quick - with gears - and blue (bit tatty) handlebar tape.

Looks a bit like this one http://tinyurl.com/32abgqt

And, dunno, but it sort of felt like it maybe wasn't his bike but someone else's baby...

He was doing that holding-my-mobile-flat-to-talk-into-it-cos-I-am-a-tough-guy thing.

But he was buying new inner tubes so at least it is being looked after.

  • Ballz! I forgot to mention: I did a series of Dr Bikes sessions in various Hackney estates for youngsters that was sponsored by the police. One of the bikes that turned up was a Scott mtb frame that was being run as a single speed, which, I immediately recognised as being stolen. I told the kid (who wasn't the thief) what the situation was and that if I found out who the original owner was we'd be back. I've got the frame number somewhere, if it's yours or you know who it may belong to PM me asap.

  • Just had this stolen while in Victoria Park was busy pretending to be able to read a book in the sun when I heard some laughing I turned over to see a yooof riding off on it with two others on bikes and laughing while 7 of his mates walked behind banadans and hoods up.
Not much I really could do and then one of them mentioned the street I live on (bike is left lockedup outside on street) so basicly if I'd called the cops the there would have been dramas afterwards im sure.
I figured I'd just leave it on the thought they will get gang raped in prison at some point.

    On Gumtree at the moment!!

Thanks for letting me know, rather Ironic that I just built a new replacement beater...
I can't fucked going all the way to peckham or dealing with the cops.
I didn't report it stolen and don't really have any proof it's mine.

  • You have photos, do it anyway.

what have you got to lose?

  • I was attacked on my bike at 2am a few weeks ago on De Beauvoir Rd and Northchurch Rd. A guy sprints out of the shadows from the other side wearing a balaclava, pushes me into a high curb, I fly headfirst into a wall and him and another balaclava'd accomplice kick the shit out of me as I'm on the floor. They threaten to stab me, steal my bag and my bike (old Peugeot steel frame custom build - not worth much). End up in A&E with fractured toe and lots of skin missing from multiple limbs. Police told me there's been over 15 similar attacks on this stretch of road in 2 months. Guess I don't need to spell out that's it's a good idea to avoid this route home at night.

Had my bike stripped for parts whilst inside at a party on that godforsaken road. Avoid like the plague.

  • if you have a bike stolen make sure you PM the Bike Theft Task force so they have a record of stolen bikes. They are doing stings via GUMTREE so to the person who lost that cruiser e-mail the police and they can assist getting it back

  • cycletaskforce@met.police.uk

they can assist you getting the bike back and can address the thief in person

  • Hi,

I'm a reporter at the Hackney Gazette and read your post about getting mugged on your bike.
Could you give me a call on 020 7791 7788? We don;t have to use your name if you don't want to...

    Cheers
