...Ashwin St ... hiding it just makes it easier ... Definitely investing in a second lock though...
A few years ago I had my rear wheel nicked outside Barden's, in plain sight under streetlights on the main road. Been using two locks ever since and secured my seat/seatpost/stem/bars accordingly. Still not comfortable having my bike out of sight in the evening! What next, the brake? Pedals? Bartape? Could drive you mad.

My flatmate had his Chris Boardman Comp Hybrid stolen from Munster Road, Parsons Green, Fulham.
Taken from outside the Mandarin Star restaurant Munster Road at approx 0000hrs Friday night.
It's in standard condition sauf the rear tyre is a Continental of some description and the barend caps are Bontrager (red and black) rather than the usual black matt ones. Also has a largish chip on the top tube. Lights were on the bike. The one on the rear was a white front Knog (belonging to Cake - so that alone would be a nice recovery ;)) and the front was a Halfords own front.
Police are informed but we all know what that means!
Anyone sees this please, please call me and consider serious physical harm to the person offering it/riding it. Hael recommends a D-Lock to the head and recommends speaking to T4NYA if you are after any tips!

No!! The carbon bar ends!! The white fizik bartape!!!
This is the single greatest loss of the cycling community for nearly 100 years.
In all seriousness, bad fucking luck. Will keep my eyes peeled but best of luck regardless.

It wasn't even a nice/decent lever!!

If you catch someone stealing / riding your stolen bike, is it possible to make a citizens arrest?
I would just d-lock their legs together and sit on them til police arrived.
But I ain't got a clue about the law in that sense.

It's very hard to prove bike theft as the thieves usually claim to have bought or found the bike. You also need proof of ownership to reclaim a bike, keep receipts, take pictures of your bike, record all the individual parts and serial numbers, register it on immobilise.com and print out the certificate, report bike stolen as soon after it happens as you can. I would not try and arrest a thief, either threaten to call police unless you can take bike, or lock/take your bike (it's not worth dying over a bicycle so walk away if violence is likely).
From http://inspectorgadget.wordpress.com/2007/03/03/waterloo-sunset/
http://www.towerhamletswheelers.org.uk/campaigns/stolenbikes_bricklane.html
"One of the reasons that the police have a problem proving that a given bike is stolen is that the generally speaking the quality of theft reports given by owners when their bike is stolen is very poor. Typical examples are to describe the stolen bike as 'Men's mountain bike, blue'. This is just not that useful when you want to PROVE that a bike is stolen!"

Bait-bikes work well in York, but thieves let off with fine and suspended sentences:
"Officers were able to track down their property and the thief was caught and taken before York Crown Court because he was on a suspended prison sentence imposed for injuring a baby on its head.
Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said when Coolledge received the 36-week jail term he was allowed to walk out of court....decided not to make him serve the sentence."
"She said the thefts were minor offences. Coolledge had taken the bicycle with a view to selling it for parts."
See this also, again no jail time:
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/5066276.York_bike_thief_snared_in_police_sting/
"police walked in on him later the same day as he was respraying it black at his Huntington Road home in a bid to prevent its owner recognising it. He had two other bicycles, one of which had also been resprayed"

^ hmmm, the law is useless.

Hi, am new sorry if this question has already been answered:
Have just bought my first fixie, and followed advice in the locks thread (http://www.lfgss.com/thread17938.html) and got a 16mm D-lock, but having read this thread am considering getting a 2nd lock. But if thieves have power tools will this really make much difference?
Thanks

Having a second lock (not cable) is a good idea, after having wheels nicked once I like to lock both wheels as well as the frame. Losing one or both wheels costs a lot to replace. Lots of thefts are by opportunists who won't be lugging power tools around, they can easily nick unlocked wheels and components or cut cable locks with cheap portable tools. A couple of locks and a disc-alarm may make a pro-thief move on to an easier target. Ball bearings in allen bolts also works well, use magnetic or glue-gun to get them out easily or superglue for best security. I'd only leave a porn worthy/new bike locked up in public for a few minutes or within sight, use a beater/inexpensive/unfashionable bike for pub or work (unless you have insurance or deep wallet).

He has now reported it to the Police found with several other important details, that should help them. The reason why we didnt get the police to come around as well at the time because from other peoples experience with the stolen bikes and the Police it would have taken them about a month to arrive by that time someone would have bought it. And secondly the picture in the add wasnt the exact bike so we were not sure if it was his. And telling the police that we weren't sure would have just prolonged things further.
Whilst writting this post I got a text from my friend and as predicted the polices response to telling them about this was that they would get someone to call him in the next couple days! By this time all information would be useless.
You should always write down the code located under the bottom bracket so if its eva stolen it'll be easy to trace.

Yeah dont worry this was done.
To The Crane, this bike has now been located there is a pretty in depth discussion on the 'reclaiming' of the bike over the last few pages

Saw an unlikely guy riding a black IRO single-speed with black/gold Rolls seat down the Old Kent Road yesterday. I don't often see a 'serious' bike being ridden by a guy with an open puffa jacket flapping in the wind.
couldn't agree more to be honest.
