Standard reporting fail?
Did you find it on the news front page? The article itself carried a 2005 date, but confusingly enough, the site seemed to carry the other day's date on that page, too.

I suggest a cage be constructed high up on a pole in Trafalgar Square. Bicycle thieves are then locked up inside it and left to gradually starve to death, then rot in view of the public to serve as a warning to others - and perhaps create a macabre tourist attraction.
Brilliant idea!!!
I also suggest a fee for tourist who want torture the thieves, but without accelerating the death.

Alright I have lived in London for approximately 1 month and have just experienced my first bike theft.
Frame:
Ribble 531c approx 56 cm iirc frame.
Shimano RSX100 groupo
Cinelli stem & cinelli criterium drop bars
Siezed in Mavic seatpost
Cheapo alloy flat pedals
Campag front hub on GA40? rim using tub tyre
black/blue conti rear tyre.OK it didnt cost me a lot (less than £50 all up) however I had grown rather attached to the way it just worked and it had seen daily use as my commuter since I got it.
It was taken from the landing of my small apartment block (off new north road, just north of Shoreditch park, Islington. I was woken when an alarm was triggered I first thought it was a car alarm then herd voices out side, stuck my head out of the window to see it was 2 Police who had responded instantly and informed me it was a alarm on the basement flat. I told them all was secure in our flat then thought I best check the landing...and yup my bike was missing. Stuck my head out of the window again and reported it to the police who came in and took a report.
Last seen sometime just after 10pm when I arrived back on it.
Alarm woke me around 3:30 Police were here withing a minute. Not sure if it went when the alarm sounded or before. (the basement flat doesnt use the same shared entrance.I know it isnt a fixie or SS machine but hope you guys will keep an eye open none the less.
Will be down Bricklane on Sunday keeping an eye open.

Next time you might wish to try BikeRegistry.....
Cheers dude, you live and learn.
Added the rest of my bikes to it.
In some ways I am glad it was this one that went, it didnt cost me a lot and was intended to be the sacraficial bike to ride around London. Just a shame I fell in love with it :( -

This thread has incensed me after reading it - I can still remember having a bike stolen in Camden far too many years ago when I was a student. You should have seen the sad look on my little face when I saw the bits of lock.
Presumably if say someone was to go down to Brick Lane and get some clear photographs of suspicious looking bikes and 'sellers' which were then posted on this forum and said sellers were entirely coincidentally then pummelled into contrition that would be a good thing right ? -

Happy ending on the Ti bride!
Mr lbs saw two local scrotes riding it along near the shop, went out and they shat themelves and ran off. 'tis back in thebedroombike shed. -

Good lord, a man on the inside! I've had wo bikes nicked a Charge Plug Racer in 12/08 and a Fuji Track in 02/09 if anyone's bought a second hand Fuji Track I'll happilly re-imburse them, I have the frame number. Admittedly the locks I had were sh1te but I now use an Abus Discus, has anyone had a bike stolen with one of these?
Is the a list of locks out there and their subsequent ability to scupper crims?

@ flesh mx
please could you elaborate if possible about the red gazelle you saw down brick lane ? when was it ? what did it look like ? did you seen any of the parts on it ?
i lost one a good while back and still haven't given up on it ! -
• #2389
Perhaps if we organised a group to go down and photo then post up the bikes seen at Bricklane we may be able to at least trace them a little further.
I suspect I saw my 42cm Cinelli Criterium bars on the dodgy OAP chinese bike stripping stall. They had a recognisable scratch where my left lever came loose. Really is a sickening place.

An obliging crack-head has just sold me a BLUE VISCOUNT outside Brixton Tube for £2.
Not fixed, but running a bodged SS.
I presume it is stolen, so if it belongs to anyone - or you know whose it is - give me a shout, with the frame ref number (or some other distinguishing info) and you can have it back!

stolen from my first-floor balcony in E2, Saturday 8th between 9pm and 4am Sunday. Yes, Brick Lane was scoured asap.
The balcony has a locked iron gate, but someone daring can get to the gate and climb around the outside, then I guess pass the bike back. (I think if I'd put my locks through the wheels/frame it still would've been nicked, so I'm kinda glad I saved £100 on locks there).
The only change from the photos is a Campag Brev seatpost.
My number is in the private thread. Cheers - Jop

okay, only my saddle and seatpost but it meant horror of horrors, public transport. the Chesini has been parked up in russell square whilst they sort out bike parking sitch at work.
anyway, the seatpost was a black cheapy Ritchey one from HH jumble so no big deal. But the saddle was a recent £70.00 purchase so that is a bit annoying. if anyone offers you a super cheap black Tioga Spider (yes it looks like a spiders web, kinda) then it may well be mine so would appreciate you letting me know about it.
thanks

Shit news, jonny. Was your seatpost secured with quick release or more firmly? I'm not asking because I want to fish for going off on a 'you shouldn't have used QR' spiel but because I'm wondering whether thieves now come prepared to undo seatpost clamps secured by non-QR bolts. I've seen some reports that lead me to believe it's a more or less recent development.

Nooo, not the one we saw at norths birthday drinks? :(

In Russell Square?? okay that's not exactly good, but then again, a spiderweb-pattern saddle is pretty distinctive to ignore.
i'll keep a look out for one, probably those kids from the block near Marchmont Street who been hitting some bike locked outside Waitrose in the Brunswick Centre.

mr scoble - u should be putting that kind of knowledge into booby trapping capers...surely

no oliver, i only use QR on my road bike and my underpants ;) they would have needed two 5mm allen keys is all though. i am kinda just pleased the rest of the bike was still there. abus lock round rear wheel and rear triangle. kryptonite mini-d round front wheel frame and rail - just mainly annoyed about the saddle and the fact i shouldn't really have been using the pretty bike so much

yeah, that's the one. that saddle only saw two weeks of riding. it's only a saddle though - feel way more sad for those on here losing their whole rig

cheers ed, yeah i have heard stories around these parts. there is a guy in our office who has special permission to bring his complete bike (some kind of ss cannondale) into the office. i envy him a bit. and now just a little more.

Remarkable as it seems, i awoke this morning to find both my bikes had been removed from my locked 5th floor balcony. They were locked together. My wife is pretty insulted that they didn't also take her holdsworth, but I guess they had their hands full, what with the deadly drop and all.
Anyway, i post a pic or two here and full description in the hope that they might be recovered. The polo bike is very distinct (i'll post in the polo threads too - apologies for double posting, i really fucking want it back).
The pub commuter:

late 70s / early 80s steel Trek frame from US - not very common here, nice head badge, black scabby paintwork
Mavic Open Pro rims to SJS hubs (like formula but with tear-drop cut-outs)
Condor Sugino Uno cranks
Clear plastic BMX pedals with homemade straps
Campagnolo front caliper
Cut down Brooks B17 saddle
Alpina carbon forks
BIG chunky black BMX stemIt's an ugly thing but it was great fun to ride.
The Polo bike:

Red Raleigh frame, early 80s totally covered in stickers
Black Rigida DP18 rims to 36hole SJS hubs
Black Sugino Cranks
Silver riser bars, Black bmx grips, left hand brake lever with skull head on end
Double double BLB steel toe clips on MKS Slyvan pedals
39 x 22 gearing
New Brooks Swallow saddle
Big chunky Red BMX stem
Very odd, you're right, just found a report on a site called Police 999 from 2005 re: community service.
