i don't see how people can walk in flip flops let alone ride in them

Walking in flipflops can actually be safer in the urban environment than using shoes. It's the simplest, purest form of walking and you feel completely connected. Zen, etc.

And that brake cable looks like it might be too short.

But I agree with you. If its an appropriate place to wear flip-flops then just go bare foot. If you can't / don't want to go bare foot then put some shoes, trainers or boots on. They are pointless. Ugly. Uncomfortable. And they are actually borderline evil, the way they make you think that that your wearing something to protect your feet when your not. The only thing that can possibly said for flip-flops is that they are not sandals.
