  • Is there an engineer approved way in which the aesthetic of the Feather stem could be kept?

    The aesthetic sucks almost as hard as the engineering, why would you want to keep it?

  • it's not about the weight, it's about power while sprinting, when you're twisting bars AND stem.

  • I'm not engineer but:

    Cyclist weight on a bike: 60% on the rear, rest on the front.

    IMHO, according to your mechanical rules, it's more important to have 2 bolts on your seatpost collar than on the stem.

    Weight distribution isn't that relevant. The question is how the rider imposed loadings translate into stresses on the components. The steerer clamp is only about 40mm long, and exposed to large twisting loads. The seatpost clamp has smaller twisting loads and the fulcrum point is typically 75-100mm away from the clamp bolt, where the bottom of the post sits inside the seat tube.

  • how are those guards attached to the bob jackson up there? what's the name of those mounts/clips for allowing full guards on frames without bosses?

  • Does it matter? The Feather is only ever going to be posed on, you don't think those mudguards will ever get grubby do you? Let alone an aesthetically unpleasing sprint with consequent loss of poise.......

    It definitely gets ridden in the wet; it definitely doesn't get raced on.

    I can see an aesthetic appeal of not having the bolt(s) protruding from the rear of the stem. Not least because it makes it look more like a classic quill stem, which many people prefer on a steel frame.

  • Final question- would it be a really bad idea to run a stem such as the one on the Feather with a carbon steerer?

  • My money is on yes.

    But why not get a custom stem with a more appropriate steerer clamp arrangement?

    Yes.

  • Booo.

    SKS Raceblade long,

  • Longer head tube, and a more conventional placing of two bolts on the stem clamp.

    Lots of custom stem tend to have a single bolt, surely enough with a steel steerer?

    Didn't fancy the full build. But thought paint and details were worthy.

  • Found it, Robi Mather;

  • How much of a strength compromise is this internal set-up?

  • if that's a wedge stem you cant use it with carbon. thats a pretty big compromise

  • Steel steerer.

  • Lots of custom stem tend to have a single bolt, surely enough with a steel steerer?

    the issue is the bolt sheering when it's at the angle of that Feather one, not the fact it's a single bolt stem.

  • So as long as the bolt is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the bars/stem it doesn't matter whether it's on the front or back or whether it's high or low?

  • Found it, Robi Mather;

    I would feel safer riding this than the feather

  • I really dont get the point with the feather stem as it is not symmetrical. Ruins it even without the obvious technical problems.
