people post pictures of bikes that they think are really nice looking, in their opinion bike porn, and everyone gives them shit because its not campag or some vintage track brand

No, we give them shit because the bikes they are posting are 'meh' at best, and frequently worse. The unambiguously great bikes don't get shit whether they are brand new or 100 years old, and regardless of cycling discipline and manufacturer.

Most importantly, though, this is basically a bike criticism thread; people who post bike pictures are essentially giving a favourable critical appraisal, and it is in the nature of the art that there will be disagreements. Mostly there is a consensus and then some outliers; since, historically, outliers have sometimes proven to be the avant garde of the future consensus, many of the people who disagree with the current consensus fancy themselves to be visionary, when the balance of probabilities points to their being among the 99% of outliers who are just devoid of good taste :-)

Functional is exactly as it's name implied, doesn't necessary mean rack and mudguard.

The vast majority of pro team road race bikes are functional but not porn, not sure that you need to be old to see that.

There are not enough pure porn bikes to fill the quota I need to see every day. And with a criteria like Fred said, a nice bike, not porn but with a few interesting or sweet details we almost reach that quota. We don't have a thread for the sweet spot that is somewhere between porn and practicality do we?

Or maybe we go far beyond a reasonable quota and into saturation? With the flood of 'meh' bikes, I can't have been the only one who just scrolled past all of them and thus missed whatever it was that Fred liked, buried as it was in a morass of poor photography and indifferent bike builds. If, instead of posting 20 complete bikes, he had picked out the 5 best features among them, then found decent illustrations of those features and accompanied his pictures with some critical text, we might be having a much more interesting conversation. This could be the Radio 3 of bikes, rather than the Classic FM :-)
