In my last road race of the season, half the peloton were brought down including myself. I've never seen so much "smashed up carbon". Lucky for me, I was able to get going again and as I rode home for pride, I couldn't help but think..........."do I need a 2K bike frame" when the likes of a Cannondale cad frame is more than suitable for the local bike races/crits?
Get rid and get something steel......you know you want to!

^^ I've been wondering for a while what the actual difference is between CX and this new gravel grinder fad.
If I got this right, gravel grinders are for wusses who don't ride in mud and so don't need much clearance?

LOL! I will think about that Pat..........did you see the reply from Sir mdcc of Tester? I thought he would say about a quality ali frame like a Specialized E5 or the cannondale caad frame like the one a few pics above.
It was seeing the picture that reminded me of my dilemma. I did not think for one minute of getting steel. I will look into this as I very much value Testers advice.

quality steel would cost more than quality alu, I don't think there's a huge range of race-ready steel frame out there.

The truth is if you can't afford to replace it then don't race it ..

CAADs are good for racing, but not so good for crashing...
quality steel would cost more than quality alu
This is true, but both cost more than...

Unless you're going to have lots of frame destroying crashes, it might still be cheaper to ride a £400 Planet X or other Chinese crabon rather than a £800+ domestically built 853 frame. Some of the crashes which write-off crabon will also need £200 worth of tube replacement on steel after all.
Of course, the hard truth that all poseurs wish to avoid is that, if you have the talent, £140 spent on PX aluminium will get you all the frame you need to get noticed and never pay for your own frame again.

Canyon and Trek do have a crash replacement program.
The other thing to look at is M&S home contents cover. A friend recently had entire new bikes (£2k+) paid for with no fuss after a racing accident. I don't even think it it was a named item. He also said they're probably changing their policy soon.

That attempt at colour matching components is so poor, if I could only see in black and white I'd be down with that

Twice that would get you a Dolan carbon with fork, headset, seatpost, and seat clamp.
