lovely odd shape on the bates there. It kind of looks like the shape complementing function or something like that... maybe a small spring effect?
Like Hetchins' curly stays and Baines Flying Gates, Bates Diadrant forks were really all about letting people know you had a Bates, and nothing to do with function. In the olden days, amateur riders weren't even allowed to have the frame maker's name on the bike just in case they were being paid to ride a particular brand, so manufacturers came up with distinctive designs which would be recognisable even on stealth bikes.

Interesting story! Ultimately leading to bikes like this?
But I was more getting at the shape complementing function in a way where the shape has not a physical function but a visual one. Like where absurd clearances have no purpose but make the bike look like it can go fast on its own. Or where less rake on a fork "looks good". Kind of seems a obligatory must for porn credits. Sometimes just the color can make the bike... Im just intrigued by how that works. -

and im also intigued why bikes like this (which I like) dont come with cardan drive, could be so clean.

Bit specialist maybe. A lot of utility frames like that, are built to be as flexible in build options as possible. To up the production numbers and keep them affordable.
That one above IIRC is a custom one-off. So could have been. How would that work with dual drive I'm not sure. (both pedals and motor)

Its the most visually attractive longbike I've seen. I thought it was a NAHBS jobbie.
Theres some wicked pics, builds, and vids on EndlessSphere.com, of electric driven longbikes.

Phil, you should have taken the picture without the frontbrake, a little bit more porny.

Hmmm, yeah, a more porny bike set-up I suppose, nice and clean. But I was drawn by the photo composition, and I really like the frame colour, which shows up nicely here.
