and since ive already chimed in...
a person's identity is an amalgamation of everything that theyve experienced in life and also of heritage. I grew up in the Philippines, but this didnt stop me from being raised in a very English manner thanks to my father. I feel closer to the english side of my family than I do with the Filipino side and can relate easier with them.
Identity as with people and life is not a black and white thing but full of grey areas that make things interesting and unique. if he wants to be proud of his heritage, let him, im pretty sure its not all he is.

I totally agree, but identity doesn't have to come from who your family were. I prefer my personality or distincitveness to come from what I have learned, the experiences that I have had. It's a very egocentric viewpoint, I grant that, but it works for me personally. I am a product of myself and my will to change who I was brought up to be and the life I once lived. Obviously these things have shaped me but they do not define me.
I am not arguing with your view point and we are all products of ourselves, but, our familys, along with other external sources, have influesced what we as individuals have become.

I'm growing tired of your bullshit. I ride bikes. I make bikes. I talk about bikes.
All I hear out of you is noise, noise, noise, Blah, negative, blah blah.Would you rather we talk about the 8 inches of my boot that will need to be surgically removed from your ass?
I guess my Madonna legwarmers comment really struck a nerve with you today, eh?
Try being less of a douchebag, people might actually like you.

OK, OK, let's cut to the chase. We both think the other's a tit for different reasons, I can deal with that, water off a ducks back but seriously, can you answer just one simple question?
Why do you ponce about in a kilt and try and lead your life as a Scot? And referring to your 8 inches of boot in my arse threat - I'm quaking in my boots...

I agree with you, all external sources have a baring on what you become, that is the joy of learning. Why is it necessary to outline our families as a seperate entity. To me that seems as contrived as singling out a minority in any other situation. I just don't see the point in seperating the two just as I don't differentiate between gay or straight people, different ethnic origins.
Let me pose a question, if you are telling a story which involves a caucasian person that you saw walking down the street do you feel the need to say white guy? How about if the guy had darker skin? What if they were female? My world isn't like that. I see a person the specifics of gender / biological sex / race etc are extraneous information that I don't feel the need to acknowledge.

Ha! Saucy cunt! ;-)
Funny you should say that, few years ago I worked with a scouser and he didn't believe I was born there so I had to ring up my Mum to speak to him so he could hear her scouse accent!?
Anyway, what you doing on here, thought you were on standby duties?

Let me pose a question, if you are telling a story which involves a bicycle that you saw rolling down the street do you feel the need to say white bike? How about if the bicycle had darker tyres? What if they were a lo-pro? My world isn't like that. I see a bicycle the specifics of geometry / intended useage / colour etc are extraneous information that I don't feel the need to acknowledge.

I think the color of your skin/ gender/ sexuality and so fourth have a great baring on who you become as a person, how you react to people and how people react to you. I dont hink this is a negative view. This is my view and in no way am I putting down or trying to influence yours.

Why is it acceptable to say things like this, but not apply the same logic to - say - black people who defend their Jamaican roots (for example)? The Winward was 1948 (I think), so 60 years = 3 generations, which means you've got Jamaican teenagers whose grandparents were born in the UK, but would anyone tell them they're not Jamaican?
I'm not trying to pour gasoline on the fire, I'm just curious about what seems to be a double standard to me.

I wear the kilt rarely. I drink Single Malt waaay more often than I wear the kilt.
I wear it because I enjoy it. I dont try and lead my life as a Scot. I know a mexican that wears a kilt, does that mean he leads his life as a Scot. He likes it cause its comfortable and who gives a fuck?I admire and love my family tree. Its too bad douchebags like yourself cannot understand why anyone else would want to have pride in their heritage.
As for the boot, you should be quaking. I wear a 47.
