Object i am going to disagree with you, people have every right to be proud of their heritage, I am born and raised in London, educated in North Yorkshire, and come from a proud family of scotsmen, as i said earlier in the thread my uncle is head of the Macdonald Clan, and although i have lived in England most of my life, and as a result support English sporting teams, i am still fascinated by my Scottish Heritage, some of the shit my ancestors got up to is very inspirational to me, and whenever i am down i remind myself of the shit they had to go through and remember i have a pretty good life - my family are Scottish Roman Catholics who were nearly persecuted off the face of the earth by the English, and some had to decamp to france, and half my family live in Argentina as a result, as they becanme farmers there as their lands were taken from them.

When i was at school in Yorshire, i was always admiring of the hospitality and generosity of the local people, who were intensly proud of mainting this tradition that was passed down from thier ancestors.

Whilst americans can be cringeworthy with their faux nationalism, it is important to remember that many americans came to be americans because their ancestors were fleeing persecution in their own countries, and it is important for them never to forget this.

Disagree with DW on his choice of graphics if you want, but dont make the fact that he is proud of where his family comes from, no matter how long ago, a reason to hate.

VInylVillain, as I clearly stated it is only my opinion, I do not expect you to change yours. The thing that confuses the fuck about me is why you care about your family history? Does your being a blood descendant of someone make their plight more intriguing or more meaningful than the hardships lived out by everyone who has ever been alive ever? History is a fascinating thing and can teach us a lot but that's a generalisation.

Personally when I'm down I remind myself of the suffering addicts through the ages and the world, or the torture inflicted on Africans by the slave trade, or the annihilation of the American Apache by the european oppressors. I am not descended from any of these people but it doesn't make their stife any less real.

My point, is simple, for me I do not understand why people are obsessed with their own heritage as I class myself as a human being. Race/creed/religion etc have no baring on this. Everything, good and bad, that has ever been borne out by a human is intrinsictly linked with all of us.

I was lucky to have a privileged upbringing, ans as a result was surrounded by a lot of fucktards at school who thought that their family history was the only relevant matter, and sadly still do.

I think a lot of people find inspiration in their history's, and whilst this should never be used to judge others or raise yourself up above others, it can be of great personal benefit.

If we didn't have identity don't you think the world would be a more boring place? Unless DW has said that he wants it to be publicly discussed on a forum, then why not just back off and let him be? He can call himself Filipino as far as i'm concerned. It's no business of mine.

I guess we come from very different backgrounds and this may have caused the differences in our opinions. I am not proud of my background (though I am not embarrased by it either).

I suppose this could be linked to a tirade I made a while back regarding celebrity. I have never been interested in the individual achievements of specific people/groubs as I see all positivity as coming from people and all negativity as propagated by the same people.

I totally agree, but identity doesn't have to come from who your family were. I prefer my personality or distincitveness to come from what I have learned, the experiences that I have had. It's a very egocentric viewpoint, I grant that, but it works for me personally. I am a product of myself and my will to change who I was brought up to be and the life I once lived. Obviously these things have shaped me but they do not define me.
