It resists the backwards thrust caused by sitting behind the BB and pushing on the pedals. By doing so, it relieves some of the necessary opposing tension in the arms. Particularly noticeable when holding the centre of the bars and pushing hard on a climb, although the various 'lumbar support' designs (including a system of wires and webbing slings used by the Italians TTT squad) seem to have been aimed at TT bikes more than climbers
