Why the highlight on "make" ? Do you think they grow them? :]
Brooklyn Machine Works, I remember when they made all of their own stuff, they clearly don't now. Even their pedals look like they've been farmed out to somewhere now.

I have never ridden a BMW but I agree with what you say, they are innovative and without the presumably million dollar research and development budgets.
A good example would be Graeme Obree's bike, which cost him peanuts;

You didn't complain when BSA* start making bicycles (*Birmingham Small Arms).
Even if they're not making as much stuff as they used to in their workshop, they're still around because of how they started out.

Welcome to the real world.
The time you speak of, when they made all their own stuff, was the time they nearly folded and had to make some important decisions to allow the company to continue and grow.
In order for a relatively small company to research and develop new products they need to prioritize which products in their range are sorted and they can get manufactured elsewhere to acceptable standards.
I've owned both BMW made pedals and outsourced pedals, and guess what...they work the same!There is no way a 3 or 4 man operation could churn out all the products they offered and still devote enough time to creating new products.
There are only so many hours in a day. -

I don't have a problem with them outsourcing parts from taiwan, their product range is weak though. Their pedals, they looked dangerous in 97 and still look dangerous now. Once those puppies have lost their edge your shins are mince.

They're called 'Shinburgers'...what do you expect? :]
That's why you're meant to use them with shinguards.
Again though, they're bloody strong.
I could tell you a story about how their pedals saved a few riders from being stranded when their team bus was broken down once, but i'm sure everyone is bored of my BMW stories by now. :]Besides...it's no worse than other companies...

They are more dangerous, those syncros ones have replaceable steel pins that will last longer and even when they are worn you can replace them. The brooklyn ones are just aluminium.
