Wearing a kit might not be cool, but wearing those professionally torn & faded jeans and riding that cervelo is _________.

AX-Lightness Alpha 580 gram frame + AX6000 225 gram fork + Headset = 4600 € rumoured. When you compare that to the Cervelo California Project, the AX seems like a veritable bargain!

Yes, perhaps monetarily. But that Alpha frame would be horrendous to ride, whereas the Cervelo is meant to be stiff and light. As far as I'm aware, they're a brand that stick to their word.
Having had a quick glance at the AX-Lightness line-up, there are very few of their products that I'd actually ever want to own.
Plus, that Cervelo looks awesome whereas that AX looks like it might break (could be the photo, could be viewing bias).

No "pissing contest" because as you say it could be viewing bias .. but AX Lightness is a supplier to motorsports for different classes and categories such as Formula1, Le Mans, FIA GT, DTM, MotoGP/Superbike. The cycling branch profits from that technology .. so, given that they build parts to higher standards than the aerospace industry and in specific even NASA, I'm guessing the frame won't break if used within it's limits. As for how it would ride .. I don't really care, I can't afford either frame! What I like about the Cervelo is that a pro tour manufacturer has attempted to make a product that can compete and possibly surpass the majority of boutique frame builders, because ultimately some of the R&D will filter down to a price point I may be able to afford ..

If you look over at weightweenies, you'll find Cervelo is not often cited as particularly lovely to ride. The Project California is just a further lightening of the R3/R3SL line, and while it's clever to make a raceable frame at that weight, many of the bikes people are actually in love with to ride day to day are in the >1kg frame range, already light enough to be easily built down to the UCI minimum. As a technology demonstrator, it's vaguely interesting, but the S3 is a better indicator of the direction road race frames are heading.

Agree, now that race bikes are at 6.8 there is no need to make the frames (or anything else) any lighter and it is only the marketing war that would warrant the "my part is lighter than your part" angle.
Development should now be spent on improving function, aerodynamics etc, which is more interesting to me.
not a fan of sram but i kinda like this
