for decades, specialized has continued to blow my mind. even as i learn about fanicer and fancier bikes, they've managed to make some of the meanest machines around.
A Tarmac built up like that is dream road bike for me. I'd take it over nearly any other road bike out there. I simply love the Lightweight logos too. And of course the wheels themselves.
my god those cranks above^^

Are they stickers or painted? I saw a pair out today, should have asked him.

Me too. I've heard there's problems with them coming un-bonded though.
I've seen a cracked / unbonded set. Mind you that was 1998??? Nobody seems to pick up on how rough the machining is on them - anyway take it from me it's rough as hell.

more from Mario Hartmann (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mariohartmanncom/):
I saw a guy riding the same bike (the white one above) a couple of days ago, on chelsea bridge. His one was belt drive, and it took me a while to spot where the belt could be fitted thru as it was not located at the drop-outs as I could see one the only few belt driven bikes I came accross. There was a split right in the middle of the seat stay on the drive side, and the mechanisme/connection thingy looked well designed, fully concealed in the diameter of the tube... Apart from that, although it is a nice bike, it gave me the impression of a sophisticated Genesis Flyer... Not sure it is porn, but, definitely a neat bike though...
Loic
Ah!

This is the one I saw, as you can see on the serie of picture from the bottom of the page, the junction for the belt passage as described above is very discrete! Nice detail, but since there is a rear brake, does this work, structuraly?? -

Check these out (not out yet).
http://www.m5-ligfietsen.nl/site/EN/_m5__Lightweight_bike_parts/Crankset-and-bottom-bracket/M5 have been promising these for years, but they never seem to arrive.
@Autti: It's true that DuraAce cranks consistently test as the stiffest road racing cranks, but do we need such stiff cranks? OK, also, do we need <600g chainsets, but it's good to have these choices; not everybody is a 90kg sprinter.
Incidentally, my 1993 CQP cranks are as stiff as any alloy square taper cranks I've ridden, and come in at 620g complete with 50t single ring and BB, could easily be <600g for a 50/36 compact double with some tuning of the heavy duty spider and lighter rings.

M5 have been making those cranks so long the rest of the world has moved on to BB30.
The Tune cranks tested higher than DA and all others in the last comprehensive deflection test i read. I'll dig it out.

is that a camel, or one of those monsters they ride in star wars?
does it matter?

The last comprehensive deflection test I read .. and Tune where pretty flexy
http://fairwheelbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=77&t=5991
Anyway .. read somewhere that the M5 prototype crank in the picture was damaged by a belgium laser company so they are useless. The damage for M5 was 35,000 euro. I'm guessing that was the cost of the prototype as the translation wasn't very good .. so it's vapor wear!

and shattering. working in a cannondale dealer we get a lot of cannondale owners bringing their bikes back in because there is a recall on one model, which no one knows exactly which one it is. but when i spoke to cannondale about it, they said most of the time the ones people bring back are fine... its the ones which have exploded while riding you need to worry about

A green Mercian with Brooks saddle and tape? How original.
Ha! Fuck off!

vapor wear!
Sounds like a steamy version of sky-clad. The M5 cranks, meanwhile, are vapourware ('Merkins omit the U)

Sounds like the Storck groupset :C

why the hell does a bike with 'fixie inc.' written on it have a rear brake and cable guides? fully pony. and yeah, it looks like a Unikack.
and was it really necessary to write 'lightweight' all over the wheels of that s works?!

Troll?
OK I'll bite
Fixie inc is the brand name and the bike can be run safely both SS or fixed. They even do some nice geared bikes.
Component manufacture 'Lightweight' does often place its brand on its product, yes. -

Yeah. that Fixie inc bike is pretty cool.

Agreed - I noticed that too.
IMO there's nothing special about those fixie inc bikes. They're just specced to look good and are overpriced for what they are (basic tig welded cromo frame). Saying that I really like the look of those forks. I wish they sold them seperately.

Definitely focused on looks, and definitely overpriced. Still nice though.

fixe inc pure blood pictureSaw one of those geared on Holloway Rd on Tuesday. Had a chat with the guy riding it. Not much to report other than it looks nice and disc brakes are good.
