  • why in the direcction ytou dont want it?

also has a couple of extra small tubes in the BB shell, joining the down tube, I suppose also for more rigidity

    I was a bit ironic.
I think the arch doesn't make it any stiffer in the side-to-side direction, probably the direction that a sprinter like Vails would have preferred additional stiffness.
The BB-reinforcements could make sense, but that wasn't the question.

But given the fact that 3-Rensho made weird (nice?) frame designs , IMHO more for aesthetics than for function, I thought that it could be the case here as well.

  • 3Rensho taking styling cues from Schwinn?

Pointless bits of curved, small diameter, tubing since at least 1955

  • This is mental but I really like it:

  • Get lost the lot of you! I love it and there are plenty of others who do too.

I admit it is a Marmite frame though.

max youre right , there all wrong...id kill for that frame

  • This is mental but I really like it

Meh. Cool idea, but they didn't change the geo from their normal track frames... Hence it's too short with loads of toe overlap when barspinning. Not what you want from a trick frame.

  • I bet they probably expect some people will put a 650c on the front as well.

  • I think for that price you can't demand much more... It's one of the few, if not only tarck frame I would spend money on. Maybe cause it's made with Kawasaki tubing, maybe cause of the gussets.. I like it.

  • lol, what's that supposed to mean?!

It looks like old fart. Why is somebody trying so hard to "built up" such a cycle with the whole Brooks assortment, ugly bicycle racks & honjo fenders? Looks like he was trying hard (just in the way to spend money) but nothing will make this cycle unique or interesting. I guess thats just the result if people think to spend a certain amount of money will made items always something personal or special like the advertising promised. But if you can get every part & the frame as well with no problem, why not buy just a trekking cycle?
It is just so average that I don't understand why somebody is posting it here

The corny setting of the picture is telling half of the story and the yellow nipples the rest.

  • ^?

  • i think you are in a minority with that opinion nodice

  • Does it really matter? Just give me the fucking frame.

I told yo they existed Max. We'll be fighting over the next one to come up for sale!

Unfortunately I didn't win that auction I was telling you about on Thursday :(

  • it looks like old fart. Why is somebody trying so hard to fuck up a Mercian Custom with the whole brooks assortment, ugly bicycle racks & honjo fenders. Looks like he was trying hard (just in the way to spend money) but nothing will make this cycle unique or interesting. I guess thats just the result if people think when they spend a lot of money they will have always something personal or special like the advertising promised. Something so personal that it looks just like the person who was brainstorming about this mainstream junk.

If he was going to make it look like a hot randonneur, like the good old days, he just failed. The background from the pic is telling half of the story and the yellow nipples the rest.
If he was going to built up a handy bike, he has done it but the purpose is just another and this sux so much I could piss on his mudflap...

    Totally disagree with this.

The colour scheme/theme/style...whatever, may may take a page from vintage randonneur or whatever. But the bike itself is composed of purely modern components, to produce modern performance levels, at the best price. If you where build a similar bike with NOS components (to achive 'the look') you would be spending over the odds to achive a lower performance level.

The leather finishing may be an extravagance, but everything else looks 'fit for purpose' to me. This may well exclude it from bikeporn (i forget the rules), but it doesnt stop it being a damn nice bike.

  • yeah right. But if you not wanna achieve a certain look what for these non retro parts? If you wanna achieve best performance why so nuts about retro frame and parts?

And if you wanna have it straight you don't walk around and make compromises(this way can lead as well in anti porn but straight shit is better than average shit). So it is no Anti Porn it is something I don't care. Amen!

So what was the purpose of the "special" parts/frame if it at the end not turns out as porn?

  • What the fuck does it matter to you? It's SP's bike and he's happy with it.

Frankly, your opinion matters not one iota.

My point was there is no compromise. A handmade steel frame is excellently suited to touring, not just a retro gimmick, and look at the modern BB etc. I see no comprimise.

To be fair it is the bike porn thread, and its a (very) honest opinion.

  • I know, but there's no need to quite so rude about it. If something doesn't float your boat don't comment or, if you are moved to comment, at least be civil.

So... are you happy with your final draft or are you going to rewrite this again? I'm glad you kept the poignant line about the setting/'nipples', but disappointed that you omitted the bit where you said you'd like to urinate on the mudflap. Maybe you thought people might read your forum profile where you state "pissnfuck" under interests and think you're a bit, err, weird?

I live in a village in Buckinghamshire and that "corny setting" happens to be a pond just up the road from my house. If that is just too twee for you I'll be in Berlin with the bike in April, maybe you could point me toward some nice gritty urban locations? I left the valve caps on because I liked the yellow; yes, I'm that retarded.

For the record, I hadn't intended to just spend money, mostly because I have none. Rather, I've been putting bits aside for eight months now having thought carefully about what I'll be using the bike for. I'm sincerely sorry if you find it a bit showy. I admit that I got a bit carried away: The barber's pole, the leather bits and honjos are a touch over the top and the other day it occurred to me that it's all a bit dandyish. However I really don't see why it appears to have been influenced by advertising at all and I can only assume that you are a naughty boy with a chip on his shoulder his own agenda.

I disagree that it's mainstream and not personal. Having met the bloke who built the frame for me to my body shape and the guy who painted it to my specifications, I can tell you that it felt very personal indeed. Every last part was chosen by me for a good reason and there are only one or two occasions where performance has been compromised in any way. If I thought that the cost was of any concern to you I'd assure you that it actually worked out as extremely good value. Down to every last detail it's exactly what I set out to build for myself and in that respect it is completely without compromise.

I just don't know what to say about the picture, I'd love to know what it means. It's definitely funny though (ha ha funny and funny funny).

  • It's your bike and therefore your choice of bits. I like it. Might not have built it the same, but that doesn't detract from the overall end result which, in my humble opinion, looks great.
I live in East London and have a forest and several duck ponds withing a few minutes walk. Ducks rule.

  • fuck him, that bike is the dog's bollox!

  • there's no need to quite so rude about it. If something doesn't float your boat don't comment or, if you are moved to comment, at least be civil.

    Shame on you. Shame.

TBH I saw the 'pissing on mudflaps' comment as more homo-erotic than rude* ;)

    (*havent slept for some time)

  • Still can't figure out what's wrong with the location picture of SP's bike?.Looks a bit like Dorney area?

  • I don't see what the problem is? It's totally excellent in the most average way; a collection of carefully selected, quality bits carefully hung on a quality frame. A cyclist's bike, nothing gimmicky about it.
