^QBP the parts distributors in the US has an "own brand" called All City are coming out with these soon too...
Sheriff replica by somebody who has only ever seen a low resolution picture of a real one? I don't get the obsession with Sheriff Stars (and I have them on my lo-pro), but I get even less why anybody would want a modern hub pretending to be one very badly. The elegant NDS dust cap is at least as great a part of the Sheriff Star aesthetic as the star itself, surely?

is there anything you don't know, mr mitre? (that's not a sarky comment!)
i reckon that, by now, you've established your expertise thoroughly enough on this forum to warrant posting few bits of guff, fake knowledge.. just to get folks scratching their heads. ie that peter purvis modifies headsets in his spare time, that's what i'd do anyway. a bit of bogus provenance etc. i envy your position. -

What's an NDS dust cap?
See how it blends almost seamlessly into the shaping of the hub body on the original. -

OK I conceed the "very badly" bit, but why on earth wouldn't you want a modern version of something old?
Surely that would be the ideal - modern tec + classic styling.
also here's my contribution:

I do want a modern version of something old, but in an industry which evolves mainly by small incremental improvements, a "modern version of something old" is just a modern thing. That's why I want a 596 more than a 496, and a 396 not at all; you can see how key styling cues have been carried over the generations, but the modern thing is objectively better.
Of course, if I could have something as elegant as the original Sheriff Star which also had the bomb-proof functionality of Goldtecs or Phils, I'd want it even more, but the forthcoming second rate Sheriff Star knock-offs look unlikely to hit either metric.

No. That to me is a really perverse idea and not at all 'ideal'. Modern technology should never be shoehorned into a shiny silver hub. Modern technology would be intrinsically something completely different. You can see what it looks like by looking at the top-end of what is on sale everywhere.
Why should things be inauthentic? Don't forget that old things aren't always actually better-looking (what does that even mean?), but in fact are imbued with a nostalgic and heritage. That is what the word classic means. Things that are widely considered to be classic become so by, over time, being judged to be outstanding in some respect.
What you are suggesting is no different to new houses being built with half-timbered 'mock tudor' exteriors. They are built, or should I say procured, using current materials and technology but emulate an historical appearance, essentially because people take a certain comfort in the familiarity of understood superficial style. It holds a certain weight, but it is my opinion completely backward.
Things can take on the *spirit * of old-fashioned things - the pursuit of performance, craft, design intent etc.- but shouldn't have to look old-fashioned. Things move on and in no time at all 2009 super record derailleurs (for instance) will take on the same measure of charm as a well-buffed yet archaic friction shifter.
I am the first to go pieces over a nicely thought-out, antique component, but making things look that way deliberately can only ever be retro; that is to say retrospective, fake and, ultimately, dishonest. I personally don't always buy into the modern(ist) idea that things should outwardly reflect their material constitution and means of fabrication, but at least let's have some respect for the cultural importance we place in things.
Rant over.

Superprecise - good points, well made.
Your analogy of a mock-tudor house has made me shudder a bit tho... I'm now thinking I am the type of person that would build a faux-georgian house in LA :(
... I need to have a bit of a think... re-assess my values and then I'll get back to you.

Sometimes it can be justified. If there's a new development in the middle of historic part of town you can go both ways - fit something ultra stylish and modern between tudor building or go for a style matching surrounding area. Definitely no-no is modern, but plain and "of council development-like" stricte functional appearance.
The same is with bikes. If you own the newest frame stick with the modern gear. If you have old frame, go for something more classic. If you can't find classics or can afford them, go for the substitute. I think about it as a temporary solution, though.

Ok I'm going to try really hard not to do that thing where ppl get anal and nit-picky over little bits of phrasing instead of reading the whole in context...
I've decided that Superprecise, I agree with allot of what you said... but just to deal with one point quickly
- the descion started with the Sherriff Star, which seems to be functionally poorly designed, but visually beautiful. Therefore I wholeheartedly agree with MT's post above.
On your essential point that retro (as in your last para) is bad bc its fake, etc. I've decided that for me its all about how you replicate. If it is done with quality and integrity, then it is ok with me (see pic)
I don't think that practicaly, reproducing old designs impacts on new design, and I don't think it takes anything away from the old ones. If its a pleasing design that works its all good to me.
Using your eg of a mock-tudor house (which I think is great BTW), they are usually done in completely the wrong place and in the wrong way... like lacing that Phill hub above to some sic deep-Vs and put it on a BMW Gangsta. But on a classic styled bike it works.
For another eg of classic styling with integrity see:

FINE.
So close, so so close. With a normal chain it would be lovely.
Big pic - linkThat is heavy!*
*Dito chain point (although I actualy think its some sick slightly blue ano that has been caught badly by the light)
ps - I dont want to hear any of that "oh, but the tyres don't match, they've used different inner-tubes and you can't contrast cobbles with hand-carved granit..." shit!

+1, I agree. There's defo a groundswell of people going for pretty old road bikes, following on from the retro-track fixed-wheel look. Isn't scoble getting geary? He must be a pretty good barometer of bike fashion
Will there be a new forum?
